Default Un-conventional or conventional Substrates

What is the history of the substrates you've used for your AFTs? Or that you know of other people using? Any conventional or unconventional things you might have used successfully?

I am currently using reptile carpet for the 3 fat tails.
Now, thats not very unconventional, I know. But my uro is on ground walnut shells. I say this because maybe up until a few months ago, my afts were on zilla ground walnut shells (now its called DesertBlend I think). Yes, they were on it. And I had them on them for about a year or so. The only reason I changed was to try something new. Might try sphagnum for moisture next, who knows.
But like I said my uro is still on the shells. I am skepticle when people say things WILL cause impaction because honestly it never happened to my little family. I'm very glad. But my view is that impaction isn't something that happens always and to all herps.
Anyway, those are two of the substrates I've used since I've had my fat tail family. Conventional and unconventional.

I use coco fiber for my fat tails and have a few plants. The hides are ceramic with ceramic bottoms and are half buried in the coco fiber over the UTH. I have been misting them every morning and they seem to like to drink then.

It is and isnt. It helps with humidity, but my concern is ability to digest. Maybe because I have no experience with it. I, too use the zilla walnut shells for my one fat tail. Never had problems, like it, will continue to use it. I guess it can and cant be considered unconventional because although people USE it, its not widely common. Its warm, thats what I like about it.
