View Full Version : We got a Tokay today

I got a Tokay today. She was "free" but her tank cost me a whole 10 dollars. She has a partial shed on her back and is 2.5 y.o. (according to the folks who I got her from) and is approx 11 inches long. I got her cage set up and I put a water bowel on one end. I put a towel over the top of the cage to try and up the humidity. Now my problem. Heat. I put 4" heat tape under her tank across 1/3 of her tank (going long wise). My questions is the Johnson is locked in at 89, for my ball pythons hot spot. Will this be OK for the Tokay? What is the hottest that their hot spot can get before being harmful? I whetted a bit of the towel to help get some humidity in the tank right away (and that is where she is hanging, not in her hide like I expected) The towel that I draped over the tank hangs down one side (the one with the water bowel) so it makes a dark corner. I put some meal worms in (I was feeding my rats and I get them as a treat sometimes) her inclosure's and I plan on just leaving her alone for a week or so. Is there anything I am missing?

I want to get pics but will wait till she is settled in. I also plan on getting some fake trees to put in her tank. It has (what looks like) potting soil and pot upside down for a hide, a tree limb, and a rock (not a hot rock). in it, so it is kinda bare.

I got her at a garage sale. I asked why they where getting rid of her and they said "she is SO loud" I thought it was only the males that called?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just couldn't leave her there when my roommate has been longing for one forever and she looked so bad.

Is it a boy or girl?

Congrats on the tokay. With the humidity just mist down the tank really well a couple times a day and it will be fine. With the heat I would a heat lamp, They will take advantage of it during the day, also you wont see a tokay on the ground very often so really and UTH for them is worthless for a basking spot. I have my basking spots around 92F They can handle pretty warm and humid temps. If you stick your hand in the tank and it feels hot and humid and your glad you are not in there...then it is perfect. If they are getting rid of her because she is so loud. It is probably a male. There is a link to a care sheet that should help you out alot.

I decided to take a few pics so I could show what Tokay looked like. I don't know if you can see the shed on her back. The set up was what she was living in except the large water bowel on the right and the towel. In the bottom photo you can see her in the upper right of the cage.

That is a male. With the shed on the back of its skin that nothing that misting a few times a day cant fix, and you need to make sure you mist, tokays dont usually drink out of bowls. I would add some fake plants or live in the cage for it to hide behind. He looks like he is in fairly good condition over all.
