Hi there everyone,
I have a heating dome that is what I think ceramic.. Or well its similar, it's not a metallic material..
However, it terrifies me how hot the outside gets.. It has already fallen over once on me and burnt a large whole in my carpet..
It really makes me uneasy thinking about it falling over since it really has nothing keeping it in place, it basically just sits on top of the metal wire that makes up my tanks cage , especially if I am gone out for the night, or am at work and classes all day..
Are their domes that do not heat up and aren't such a fire hazard if they fall over?
Thanks! :)

first of all, you are right to be concerned! house fires start this way pretty often.

second of all, how is it falling over? is a cat knocking it over? if so, you need to put your gecko where the cat can't access the cage at all. is there a way you can secure it, like with one of these (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.arcatapet.com/fullsize/10737.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat%3D10737&h=400&w=400&sz=18&tbnid=q5RiLS8LhTFigM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=90&zoom=1&usg=__-sKW7qSPir9hccSq27JDCSzf0S0=&docid=Hdoh6h96KX4LNM&sa=X&ei=3joeUpPHH8jeiAK5_4HABg&ved=0CFEQ9QEwAg&dur=381)?

and ceramic is usually off-whitish with a grainy, stony feel to it. you definitely want to make sure this is what you're using as other types of fixtures will eventually start a fire.

and, you have to be able to keep your gecko warm. the bulb causes heat. the only other overhead option that might be safer is a radiant heat panel, and they have to be safely mounted too.
