Graham yea I have read a whole bunch of articles and discussions about the topic and I almost like it that the conclusion is open ended for some reason even though it would really be interesting to know exactly what they use this ball for? I see them wiggle it, snake it from one side to the other while eating or mating and I love the perfection of the knobs and I guess this is just a big part of the attraction to me. I'm sure one day someone will come up with something more concrete?

I think its "personality" too that attracts me to them. I keep Leos and Knobtails and the knobtails by far and away are more interesting terrarium subjects. These little guys are just super full of piss and vinegar. The first time you have a 3 cm gecko lunge and/or do its push ups at you you'll either jump back or laugh or both. They seem very aware of and annoyed at their keepers but in an amusing way. Perhaps the most character of any herp I have worked with, like grumpy little old men with big eyeglasses and a tiny body. The only downside I can think of is prices (which are improving on the more common species at least...and not a downside if you can get offspring from your animals) and perhaps the increased delicacy of some species/breeding females.

OK that was a bit of anthropomorphizing but the handle "pitbullgeckos" of our friend Bjorn above tells it all.
