Default My first step into Aussie territory.

Hey everyone,

For some time now ive been posting on this site under other species of gecko. But for the first time im in Aussie territory. I purchased my first Aussie gecko N.Amyae yesterday and he will arrive shortly. When he does, ill be sure to attach a few pics to this thread.

But in the meantime, Im itching to hear more about these little critters! So my question is, what do you like most about your Nephrurus? Being a behaviorist, has anyone observed any fascinating behaviors that this genera exhibit? Or any species specific behaviors?

I don't have one and probably never will because:
A. They're expensive. And...
B. I only rescue and these guys aren't likely to end up in a rescue or shelter.
I must say however that Nephrurus are my favorite! I would love one of these guys! I love the way they look! You def need to post pictures when you get him/her!! Wishing you success with your new one!!

I keep wheeleri, milli and amyae.

The sand bathing (kicking sand over their backs) that the wheeleri engage in is cute, especially when they are just tiny hatchlings. Wiggling the "knob" part of their tail in the sand is pretty amusing too.

Both the wheeleri and the amyae are very enthusiastic eaters as well, stalking and pouncing on anything in their terrariums.

I find my amyae are not scared of much and often rest out of their hides during the day, while the others all hide during the day and then are out and active after lights out.

Unlike the leopard geckos, it is recommended to keep these guys on a sand substrate. Even my month old amyae hatchlings are on sand.

Definitely post pictures once you get him, and congrats on the new addition! You'll love him =)

Great question! We mostly post information about husbandry, not so much about why we take care of (or "work with", which sounds so emotionless) these wonderful creatures.

My male amyae has changed from a shy hatchling over the past year into a beautiful inquisitive occupant. He often pokes his head out during the day to see what I'm up to. I also really like the deliberate way he moves, one arm or leg at a time. This is very distinctive: none of my other geckos (Rhacodactylus spp., Geckonia, etc) move like this. As others mentioned he's also fun to watch stalking his prey.

Congratulations on your new addition!

Tom

Congratulations on entering into Aussie territory! The wagging of the knob is definitely an intriguing behavior. My male deleani has "barked" at me on several occasions. I have one really aggressive occidentalis that charges my hand during feeding/cleaning, I usually flinch...

So the N.amyae male showed up DOA yesterday morning... He had paper towel all the way down his throat and must have suffocated on his way over here. Ive been sick with guilt all evening. Has anyone ever heard of this before? The breeder was very shocked and upset and agreed to ship another one on monday free of charge. But should I suggest an alternative shipping method?

The gecko seemed to be packaged flawlessly in a small cup with holes in it lined with
paper towel. He had a heat pack that seemed very warm inside. Could this be just a freak accident or is somthing wrong here? Im very nnervous when it comes to the little one being shipped on monday.

I'm so sorry to hear this; it's the worst fear when shipping or receiving. Sphagnum moss might be a better alternate material, but perhaps other more experienced people might lend their perspective. Again, my condolences.

Sincerely,

Tom

I think there is a big change that the heat pack might have killed him, I have heard of other occasions were this happened.

If he had paper towel down his throat this is obviously what killed him. I'd say freak accident...
