Default Hello from the uk! Few questions on n. amyae

Hello geckos unlimited!

My name is Adam I live in sunny Cornwall, in the uk i have been keeping herps for 12 years. Got in rhacs about 5 years ago, but I have a rapidly growing interest in nephrurus sp.

By the end of next month I will have a group of 1.3.2 nephrurus amyae. I'm currently in the process of building a rack for these and I would like to keep one per tank, I do not like the idea of plastic tubs (poor visibility, stress on animals every time you pull them out) so have opted to build front opening glass tanks.

My question to you nephrurus guys out there is:-

Is 18"x18"x16" (lxwxh in inches) big enough for an adult nephrurus amyae?
Is 12"x18"x12" (lxwxh in inches) too big for hatchlings?

Any input from you guys would be great.

Thanks again

Adam

Oh and this is an excellent forum!

Hi Adam,
Sounds like you will have a great amyae collection shortly.
Good on you for opting to make your own front opening glass tanks.
I know that some folks keep their amyae in larger set ups. The females grow to be a big gecko. However, I keep all my Nephrurus in ExoTerra terrariums (45x45x45cm). I also keep them individually (only put together for breeding). My largest amyae is one of my females (shown in an earlier thread on this forum). Initially I thought that it might be a bit squashy. However, she is fine. They are not the most active of geckos. I have increased the overall surface area of the tank floor by having underground rock hides that are covered by sand. This essentially increases floor/useable space by about 1/3.
For hatchies with the size enclosure you are suggesting, you could consider housing siblings together.
Cheers
Phil

I would keep amyae in slightly larger enclosures than that. Minimum 30x18x12inch. I use 36x18x18inch vivs. Hatchlings are in 17x11x7inch tubs.

Be sure to post pics when you get them!

Hey Man, maybe a little bigger for adults but for hatchies-juvies that's fine.
