Default Ok so I'm gonna do it!

I looked into and found out the Gecko I found at the pet store that is being sold as a leo is a C. mitratus. I'm not sure of the sex but are they difficult to maintain/breed? Is there demand for them in the trade? I'm sick I think all geckos are cool so my opinion doesn't count. How can I house him/her? and what are the reccommended breeding group sizes? Anyone have any avail.?

Thanks for your time!

I kept C. mitratus about 5 years ago. They are fun and easy. Not a huge demand at all in the trade, but a fun pet and cool gecko none the less. I kept them in a semi moist peat moss mix and kept the temps around 80.

Right now I keep 1.1 C mitratus but had a trio a few years back. They are very easy to keep and breed.

I keep mine in a terrarium sized 16" x 20" x 14" (DxWxH). As a substrate I use potting plant soil and it is planted to some extent. A few hides on the bottom and a "moist box" under a piece of cork bark. Under the moist box I have a heat mat and the ambient temp in the terrarium is about 25° Celsius wich is equivalent to about 77° Fahrenheit.

Spray lightly every evening and feed with calciumdusted and gutloaded crickets a staple food every two days or so and I think it will be just fine. They are really amazing animals to watch but as they are almost strictly nocturnal they can be a little difficult to watch unless you use for example red or "black" light.

Good luck.

Niklas

Default Thanks!

I want to say thanks for your info! Do any of you have incubating temps. I bought a nice little female...Shes a little fiesty but good to go. Are they Temp. sex dependant? As soon as I get my digital replaced I'll have pics.....I've got so many to shoot! Can they eat meal worms also? Do they require the calcium dish in the tank like leos?

Thanks again!

You´re welcome

Incubation is done in temps between 24° and 29°C, or 75° and 84°F. They are TSD. They eat mealworms and just about everything that moves as long as it´s small enough.
Dust everything with calcium. That way you won´t need the dish inside the terrarium. It might prove difficult if it gets moist since the moisture makes the calcium powder cake. I prefer dusting but others might have other opinions.

As a general tip: buy the excellent book "Eyelash geckos" by Andreas Kirschner and Hermann Seufer(among others). It contains all the info you need and lots of other interesting stuff, not to mention the superb pictures.

It can be bought online if your local petshop or bookshop don´t have it.
