Essentially, there are three lineages: C. fasciatus, C. v. variegatus and C. v. sonoriensis. The two subspecies of variegatus are very similar morphologically and likely not too different based on fossil or subfossil data. C. fasciatus might be, but I don't know the characters beyond pattern.
