Hi!
C. e. elegans is C. elegans. More specifically, one of the two subspecies of C. elegans. The other being C. e. nemoralis.
As far as I know, there are no C. e. nemoralis in captivity, so all available captive bred C. elegans are actually the nominate form (C. e. elegans).

Why would you want to keep elegans on sand???
They are not desert animals. They live in warm and moist habitats (drier to tropical forests).

The fact that the breeder is successfully keeping and breeding them on coco husk, must tell you that he's doing something right.
I've been successfully keeping my animals on common peat substrate for 12 years.

red sand = dead elegans sooner or later.
Both C. mitratus and C. elegans are not like North American Coleonyx in their care.
They need moist forest habitats, not deserts.
I guess I could have close to 700 babies hatched in the last 12 years that could testify in my favor.

If provided with constantly moist shelters, they can do very well even without spraying.
I don't know what's the exact humidity inside shelters, but it's probably pretty high.
They still need well ventilated terrariums and drier areas though, not a soggy, moldy, tightly closed boxes.

Pure common peat substrate has always worked very well for me for all my C. elegans, Goniurosaurus, felinus, masobe, etc, etc..

Hey Max,

Please take Matjazz's advise seriously!! He is keeping and breeding this species for quite some time now, and with great succes. If you don't believe him; buy a book about this species (For example; "the eyelash geckos"), cause it will tell you the same!
Kind regards,

Cindy
