Default New to Cave Geckos, is my setup ok?

Hello Everyone,

I love reptiles and have a salmon boa, a red tegu, a pacman frog, and 2 red eyed tree frogs.

I went to this pet store I hadn't been to before and saw these cave gecko babies that were just awesome. The lady had them labled as Vietnamese Leopard Geckos which are G.araneus but he doesn't look like one, I think he is a G.hainanensis.

But I setup his house in a 10 gallon with organic, non-fertilized potting soil with a couple plants such as pothos planted in the soil. He has a cave, a tunnel, and a water bowl.

The one thing I am skeptical about is that the lady told me to get an undertank heat pad which I put under the cave which is sitting on an inch of soil. So is the undertank heat pad ok, or should I remove it?

the heat pad is fine as long as temps aren't to much higher than 84 on the hot spot. overall cage temp should be about 72-76 degrees, with an 80 degree hotspot. also make sure the humidity stays relatively high (upper 70's). nightly spraying is a must.

I think she only said that to be able to sell some stuff.
Basically the babies do well at temps just a little over normal room temps.
If you have reptile room to put it in, or if you can put it on top of another cage or if you live in one of the hotter parts of the US undertank heaters arent nescessary and may do harm.

i agree with them. you might want to add another inch of soil when he gets larger to retain more humidity. post some pics of him so that we can tell you what sp. he is.

I also agree with Sune. Don't keep them to warm, just a litle above room temperature. If you have a reptile room, that useually is sufficient.
