Default What's in a name???

Hey everybody,

I can't help but notice, that on some reptileshows here in Holland (and maybe also abroad) Goniurosaurus ssp. are often refered to as; "Chinese leopard gecko"
Why this name, I'm wondering?! Last time I watched someone buy such "a Chinese leopard gecko" (Gggrrr...) and the guy behind the stand told here; 'Oh, they are kept the same way as leo's, only there from China.'
The stand was owned by a large reptilestore, and the guy working behind it, had no clue about anything he was selling...
That makes me sad....
Kind regards,

Cindy

Its for a couple of reasons. First they are Eublepharines like leos so dealers used that to thier advantage because the body type is the same and they have eyelids. They also have very faint spotting on them every once in a while. Its really to sell more of them because everyone LOVES leos so they figured it would sell more of them. I hate the name so I call them cave geckos. I recomend everyone else does too to avoid confusion.

@Gekko's and Goanna's; I totally agree. Cave gecko is a far more suitable name!

@Erik; No, Instead off that:
I told the girl who wanted to purchase this "Chinese leo" that the guy was totally wrong about everything
That they require a more specific care, that they shouldn't be frequently handled (like most leo's) and that they don't thrive in a desert type vivarium, like the guy was suggesting.
He diddn't like my intervention though..... Cause she cancelled the deal
Greetings,

Cindy
