Default goni breeder database

Okay, a few have tried to get a survey of goni breeders and it usually fizzles, but a friend of mine turned me on to google docs which are free. I've created a very basic (crude I confess) spreadsheet that works much like excel. I can "invite" people to contribute and they can add and edit their info. I currently have 20 tabs (can add more) or sheets at the bottom of the page. Each sheet can be your own personal spreadsheet and can be viewed by the others. It's basic and I think we can trust everybody to keep on their page but it is a great way to keep tabs on who is breeding these great geckos, which species they're breeding, where they came from (for bloodline diversity), and what they're looking for. There are currently three of us on there each with a page and I'd love to see more. Anybody unfamiliar with excel or spreadsheets I can answer most basic questions, and the best part is somebody may come up with something cool that you can change in your page as well so we can all continually evolve our tabs.

At the very least it's a start...so I look forward to hearing from you, and feel free to shoot me a pm if interested.

Thanks,

Mark

Doesn't seem to be much interest so if I don't find a few more to participate I'll just scrap the idea. I'm open to ideas and suggestions as I still think this is a great way for those of us breeding these guys to network amonst ourselves and get some great outcrossed lines going and hopefully increase inteerest in these cool little critters.

Thanks,

Mark

If I worked with Goni's I would sign up with your database, I think it is a good idea. Too bad, could of been very useful.

I'm not writing it off completely yet, it's just if there is no more interest here soon then there will be no point. Even just one or two more would make it worth while cause we could expand in the future, sooooo

I have a few Gonis but I'm not sure how much valuable data I can contribute. I've been keeping the genus for just over a year. I have 1.1 G. hainanensis and 1.1 G. luii. I probably won't be producing offspring until late 2010 or early 2011. They're all captive bred, but I don't have a lot of specific information about their bloodlines. The hainanensis came from different breeders... the male is ready to breed, but the female I just picked up at Tinley and is still young. I was told my juvie pair of luii were "unrelated", but they came from the same seller at Tinley, and look so similar that I wouldn't be too surprised to learn they were related. If I find any other available luii next summer, I might try to pick up another 1 or 2 to mix into this small group to ensure greater genetic diversity.

If you want people to sign up there has to be a benefit for them. Gathering the information might be useful, but I'm not sure how. Just scanning this board will give you an idea of who's working with what. I work with one species now and would like to get a couple more. But I don't see that the database will help. Most people won't sign up and those that do will not keep up their data up to date over time. The cat gecko forum/database is an excellent example. Do any of you even remember it - Felinus.nl.

I'd think putting together a really nice web page would get you in contact with more people interested in these geckos that your database idea. My opinion. In any case put me on your list of people interested in these geckos.

Best,

Chuck

yeah, I remember the felinus database, didn't know it fizzled as I always thought is was a good idea. As to the benefits I think just knowing who has what and from where it came would be valuable to those of us who are trying to produce viable bloodlines. This would be good for the person breeding just one pair from one species or multiple animals from many. An example would be an araneus breeder that was working with an unrelated pair that were originially wild caught. In trying to grow my bloodlines I would want to purchase from/trade with that breeder for the sake of genetic diversity. Or like the previous post the pair I had came from a background where their being unrelated was dubious I could enhance or trade with somebody's line which was unrelated. I think the main value is basically the ability to network with other breeders and to see what's actually out there, where it's coming from and work to grow the goni's in the trade in an orderly manner. I'll shoot you an invite to the document and you can take a look. it's not fancy, but I'll give you a tab at the bottom if you wish to contribute and if not that's cool. There are only three of us at the time, two which have info posted and we've both used different formats, so take a peek, own a page if you like and if you're not interested that's cool and any feedback...good or bad...would be great. If it fizzles, it fizzle's, but I'd love to see it work.

Thanks,

Mark
