    Question Getting my first crestie

LOG IN TO CLOSE THIS AD

In about 10 days I will be going to a reptile show (or two) hoping to purchase my first crestie. Planning on getting older juvenile or sub-adult, male.

I have an 18x18x24 Exo Terra Iíve been working on getting set up. Pics included.

I am not using substrate for now, I have tile on floor of enclosure, figured that would be easier to clean and monitor for now.

Lots of vines and branches. I live in a forest with plenty of oak trees and found some nice dead branches to use. Cleaned and then baked in oven for a few hours to kill off any nasties.

Also have two potted plants that so far are doing well.

I made two rock ledges from styrofoam and attached them to the back wall (you canít see them in the pic, they are completely covered by leaves.)

There is a coconut hide with moss in upper left corner, and a log hide I made from styrofoam in the lower right corner and a food/water ledge upper right side. And a small ďduck pondĒ in the front (itís a shallow bowl with rocks and a little water to help with humidity). Lots of things to crawl in, on and under.

I installed a cool mist humidifier (I had a spare) that is on a smart plug and timer. Will probably only need that during winter or if I am out of town overnight.

Light hood on front half of the screen with two 9-watt (40W) daylight (5000k) cfl bulbs. On for 11 hours, off for 13. Screen open in back for ventilation. And digital temp/hygro.

Iíve been testing temp and humidity this week. There is a temp gradient from top to bottom, approx 77 at top, 72 at bottom during the day and 73/69 at night.

Misting at night to 90-95% humidity, drops to approx 60% in 12 hours and seems to be staying between 50-60 during the day right now. Will probably vary slightly based on humidity in the room and seasonally.

Looking for suggestions. Anything Iím missing or should change?

It sounds like you have everything just right, and your tank looks fantastic! I hope you can find just the right crestie! Good for you, for researching and setting everything up ahead of time - your gecko will love it.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve had fun putting the tank together. I did consider a leo but have limited space for the tank and going vertical was a better option. I’m really looking forward to the expo. I will post pics after getting the new family member.

One caution - clean the rock/water bowl at least every other day. If the water sits for long, it will get pretty slimy and can harbor bacteria.

Will do. Really only plan on adding water to the bowl when I am gone overnight and there will be another water bowl. That decoration was really for me, I liked the way it looked.
