I actually watched a thing on the science channel on how geckos stick. They used a Tokay because they said they have the best feet for it. But they said geckos have hairs on their feet that look like split end after split end after split end on and on and on. It goes so far that they actually "magnetize" to surfaces on a molecular level. It was really interesting, I think the name of the show as "how do they do it" or something like that. . . but I'm not really sure it was a few weeks ago I seen it. But I have seen they replay it quit a bit.

anyways there was actually a featured video on the front page of yourube with gecko toepads saying that they are going to use them to build boots and things like that... pretty cool

Geckos use Van der Waals forces to stick to surfaces. It is not a chemical reaction, just an attractive force.
