Default Do I need any lighting?

I've had my crested gecko for a while and I've always left a lamp on during the day and turned it off at night.

The reason I do this is because I live in a basement and there is little outside light coming in. I figure that the gecko needs to know the difference between day and night.

However, lately my grandmother has been turning the lamp off. She thinks it is wasting too much power. Silly old people. Anyways, it would just be all together easier to just not have a lamp there in the first place. Would that be okay? Like what would happen if a gecko was kept in complete darkness all day?

Any input would be cool. Even alternate simpler lighting ideas. Whatever you got!

I think that they should have a day/night cycle, if they don't and have complete darkness all the time then it could probably start causing some behavioral issues. I know humans can get seasonal affective disorders in the winter due to lack of sun (especially the farther north you live).

Can you place a white nightlight next to the enclosure so it can provide enough light cycle for him during the day? Nighlights use very little energy so I think you grandmother would be less likely to turn off a nightlight than that lamp light.
