Exclamation Yet Another Sad Pet Store Tale..

I went to buy some Repashy from my local Pet Store..I of course stopped to look at the geckos..There were 10-12 of the tiniest geckos I have ever seen, in an 18"cubed Exo Terra with plantation soil, a fountain, and a large bowl of watered down repashy full of dead crickets...
I took one...they were all fancy harlis...I took the smallest one...I purposely took the one with no pattern who was nothing fancy to look at, fearing that it would be stuck in those conditions for the longest!! I couldn't take them all or I would have. Its weight does not register on my scale, which doesn't do tenths of a gram..so essentially he/she isn't even a gram..very sad conditions for a hatchling!! Feisty little one though..climbing onto my hand, jumping all over the place..It is in a Large KK and seems to be doing well...but at under a gram I am concerned.

I realize I shouldn't buy from pet stores..but hatchlings do not belong in those conditions...adults don't either....I couldn't stop myself.
I am trying to decide between Calypso and Bamboo for a name..
Thanks for looking...

It sucks how bad of conditions reptiles of all types are kept in pet stores. Leos and crusties have bright lights shining on them all day and that stresses them out. They are often kept on sustrates that cause impaction as well. I asked one pet store that is part of a growing chain if they buy leos and other reptiles from locale breeders and they said that the animals come from warehouses. It like puppy mills for reptiles, IMO. The only pet stores I would by a gecko from is one that specializes in reptiles. There are exceptions, but most large chain pet stores to have staff members who know anything about reptiles.

Your new little ones are very cute and so itsy bitsy. Since these guys pretty much just hatched within the last 1-2 weeks at the most, I'd just make sure you keep them warm. I have found that babies will eat a little better & be a little more active if they are kept between 74-78'F. But don't be surprised if you don't see them out-n-about like the older ones or even noticing any lick marks in their food bowls. Just a couple little licks can satisfy them for a few days, and their poop will be extremely tiny. I have an extremely hard time finding the poop of my babies that were born last month.

I purchased a leopard gecko from a pet store not too long ago, and it recently died. He was not eating and had to be force fed, and he lost all his weight in a matter of a week. I felt bad for him, and i did everything i could do for him, he refused to eat anything and did not drink either. I tried different foods for him and still nothing. After he died, i went to the pet store where i got him from, and told them what happened and their reply "Yes our geckos have been sick lately, we have some in the back being dewormed for parasites" I had purchased him already sick (not knowingly) and realized why he wasnt getting any better ( he was already far too sick when i got him) and i had asked why did they put out the geckos and sell them if they were sick, and the reply was that "they didnt think it was a problem" It was a problem to me, he was my first gecko and i grew attached to him. I asked about getting store credit to at least make up for this experience, and they simply said "no"
