Default My first gecko

Hello everyone!

Just got around to posting about my new cresty! Its my first reptile of any kind so Im kinda a newbie when it comes to this. I picked him up at a local petco, unfortunitely I wasnt aware of staying away from them until afterwards, but my son fell in love. He named him/her bootsy. I have him temporarily in a 10 gallon aquarium until I can get a nicer terrarium like the exo terra. When I first got him two weeks ago he was shedding. He still has shed left on his body that seems to slowy be peeling away. He was 4.12 grams and poops ever two days. I have hand fed him by touching the tip of his mouth with cgd but i assume he must be finding his food since hes going to the bathroom. I also covered most of the top of the aquarium with plastic wrap to help keep the moisture in. Any clue as to what morph he might be?

Petco's are the devil. I'm in animal rescue 24/7 so I don't buy or breed or sell but Petco's and Petsmarts are by far the worst pet stores I've come in contact with locally. He/she is a cute lil booger. Did they say how old they thought he/she was roughly?

No, they are usually clueless.

A lot of times petcos and petsmarts get them from decent to good breeders it's how they get treated once they arrive. That makes the difference. Yours looks well under 6 months. I see some flame but right now I'm looking from a phone on lunch break. So kinda hard to say. Some times you end up with something pretty good. My oldest crestie was a 24.99 special at petco almost 10 years ago and he has always been super healthy. You will have fun with There is a chance if you get a rear under pic that we might be able to sex it for you. They do like to eat super late at night so most of the time when they're young you never see them eat. Just keep fresh cgd in and you'll be fine. Congrats on the little one and welcome to your new fix.

On a side note rescued animals are always fun and challenging. I've got 4 rescued reptiles and 2 rescued parrots. It's very rewarding.

Congrats on your new little cutie!

His/her morph is "flame" due to the dorsal markings and lack of pattern in the upper lateral area (sides just below the dorsal).

I highly recommend that you read through the caresheet here on the forum as well as those on Pangea Reptile Supplies Home Page, JB's Crested Gecko Info, Ciliatus.com - The Ultimate Crested Gecko Resource - Home, and I also worked hard on the caresheet for my own website, linked in my signature.

If it's been several days and your gecko still has that much stuck shed, you probably need to start helping him out with that. A "sauna" or "bath" is usually the best way to go:

Ok so I gave him a bath and tried the qtip trick. I didn't get much off because he was freaking out and wanted nothing to do with me. Didn't seem to like me touching him with the qtip.

Don't stress it too much. Give it a break and repeat in a day or two. If it stresses to much it can be worse than not shedding. A little each night in short time periods.

Well I'm happy to report that bootsy had a full shed last night so all is well.
