Default Phelsuma laticauda Enclosure Help !!!

Hey everybody .... I may have an opportunity to get some of these cute little day geckos. There are 4 for sale ... one adult female and three 3-4 month old juvies. I have a fellow reptile enthusiast trying to find me a male ... in which case I will just get the adult female. Otherwise I may get the 3 juvies and hope that I at least have a pair out of them.

I currently have an 18"x18"x18" exo-terra that I can use to house whatever I get which I was told would be plenty of room for these geckos as they stay fairly small. I will of course furnish it with some live plants, pieces of wood/bark and some bamboo poles. I'm assuming that if I can get a male then this size enclosure would be fine for an adult pair. My concern is aimed more towards the 3 juvies if I get them. I was told that with many hiding spots they should be fine until sexable at 9 months to 1 year of age. However I've also read on the net that juvies should be housed separately until they can be sexed. Housing them separately may pose more of a problem unless I can just split the exo-terra into three 18"x18"x3"wide sections?

BTW - One of the juvies is not related to the other two ... so perhaps keeping at least the one separate would be a good idea.

This will be the first day gecko that I have kept as the other 4 species of gecko that I have are all nocturnal. So any advice that anybody can offer ... especially regarding keeping the juvies together would be much appreciated.

Thanks ... Dyesub Dave.

Keep your juveniles seperate. They will not get along if housed together. Seperateing the exo terra into 3 sections would probably more of a probelm than it's worth. I keep my juveniles in a gal. container. cut a hole in the lid and down towards the bottom to keep air flowing. hot glue some mess wire to the holes. That is the best and easiest way that I have figured out.

Finding a male this time of year might be a problem, it may not. I doubt you will have any problem finding a male in the first part of the year once they start being imported again.

Hope that helps.

OK ... Thanks for your reply. If I end up getting an adult pair is the exo-terra that I have of sufficient size to keep properly?

Thanks ... Dyesub Dave.

Should be OK..these things are a bit subjective. A few extra inches taller might be preferable but if you keep the substrate depth to 3-4 inches deep, then I would say there's enough height
