Male
Default Endolymphatic sacs(calcium)-Juveniles/females

Hey, has anyone noticed when raising juvenile Phelsuma if females tend to start showing signs of Endolymphatic sacs before your actually able to tell for sure male or female?

This question goes for adults too I suppose-Do male geckos ever have these sacs?

Here is why I ask-my 2 juvenile Phelsuma laticauda. They are nearly 3 months old.

This is one

This is the other

Yes, dissection studies show that both males and females have endolymphatic (calcium) sacs. After reading these papers it is interesting to note that calcium is present in the sacs of embryos and newly hatched young. Their full function is still considered unknown but many agree that they play a vital role in egg production and bone growth and health.

I have a male beohmei that has huge sacs. I have also had v-nigra sp males with them. I think it has to do with the individual gecko, I had phelsuma seippi male that wouldn't hardly eat dusted crickets or mrp therefore he had almost no calcium build up. My borbonica agalegae females ha.ve huge sacs that look like they are going to bust open at any minute. The male has none that you can see with your eyes. Hope that helps a little

Glad to see this question, as I'd been wondering the same thing... I have two juvenile P. grandis about 9 months old, and they both have small but distinct calcium sacs. From the discussion, I presume this does not necessarily indicate that they're females? Also, at 9 months would they be too young to be accurately sexed? I've been raising them separately as I was advised that was best, but I could give them a lot more room if I could put them together...

I am tempted to keep them until I can confirm male or female, but this will be determined by how much space I have-which isn't much. If I do once I know what gender they are I will share. Toadlady, please do the same with your grandis-let us all know what you find out

Whilst it is true that females do generally get the sacs I have a male guimbeaui with huge sacs.He had these when I bought him over a year ago and I cannot seem to get rid of them.I have noticed that with the females the sacs grow large over the winter and spring but when they start producing eggs these sacs quickly disappear. This is to be expected.I would like to know why my male has them and what I can do to reduce them.
