Default What the...!?!? Nature at its best???

Hi everyone,

Some may recall, I am the one who had the unfortunate event at the end of april: my female lineata lineata I had for 2 years was stressed out until she passed away by the new male lineata. Thread is here

I decided to keep the male, and by this month that passed, I also got to like him. It wasn't his fault anyways.

So here is the situation: we are 35 days after the female died, and 41 days after they moved together (and they did mate).

I repeat: one male alone in the viv.
And here is what I just saw (room is fairly dark now, so the pic was a 4 sec. exposition):

HOW ON EARTH??????????????
I did notice a small white thing growing in his belly but why would have I thought it's an egg?!? It's a male, why would have I?!?
Evolution - logic: 1:0

Answers to expected questions:
- No, the egg wasn't there until now (the female couldn't have laid it, she died after 6 days)
- Yes, the gecko on the pic is a male (see this pic to see both of them, and I am sure the smaller one was a female: )
- No, there are no other geckos in the viv.
- No, I am definitely really totally not fooling with anyone.

Any ideas????

My only idea is that you wrongfully thought you had a pair when you had 2 girls. I just recently figured out that one of my extra gold dust day geckos was actually a girl(thanks to the egg showing through her belly skin). Hopefully your egg is fertile regardless of how it was laid

I am really not sure about anything now :\
I posted it in the species identification thread, what species are they.

Because is this gecko is a female, the reptile shop screwed me real good....
AND is its a female, how did she get fertile form my other female????
I am sure the smaller one, who died, was a female, she had the bumps on her neck. And this one seems to have pores on his thigh.....

And interestingly, it has only laid one egg, w/o sticking it.

It might be Parthenogenesis too, but I am not sure whether phelsuma are capable of it.

You had two females...

Your dead female was killed by the dominant female...the one holding the egg in the pic.
Females are very territorial. Put the remaining gecko in a CLEAR platic container and take a well lit picture of its cloaca/femoral pores. You will see that it is not male.

I agree!

As for the newer female which just laid the egg, she was most probably bred on accident by the previous owner. If the newer one was with you for far more than the 6 days (I am talking weeks) then it was sperm retention. If you know 100% that she was never in a tank with a male then it is just her reaching maturity as females sometimes lay infertile eggs (even when they have no view of a male) when they are matured.

Hey, don't be so discouraged. From the pictures they do look like the P lineata

I have mis-sexed geckos before. Nothing new. It is very tricky to get it right until you either get an egg or you get a baby to hatch from the egg. If you look up a lot of information on the animal you intend to buy and then go to your petstore and ask questions to see how knowledgeable the employees actually are. Definately keep the egg until it hatches or goes bad though. It will be awesome if your misfortune gives you a little something in return

I haven't kept this species but just looked up some info on them and it said they don't glue their eggs

I am wondering the same thing. I have an egg from a gecko I thought was a male, that has been alone for 2 months at my place and was kept alone at the persons place that I got it from(not a petstore either) It'll probably end up being a dud egg but I am incubating it until it either goes bad or hatches
