With my corn and leo eggs i can usually tell if thier eggs are good and fertile within a couple of weeks. What about p. Laticauda? Should I be able to tell with just a glance wether or not they're viable after 2 weeks?
More than likely you should be able to tell. If you have a good eye for eggs it won't be a problem at all. I had 1 P laticauda egg that was not fertile. To me it seemed like it wasn't as white as the fertile ones. On the other hand it had good shape and didn't mold or anything until it had been in the incubator for nearly the full incubation time. Candle it if you want to know for sure. If you haven't done this before get a really bright(LED) small flashlight. Turn off all the lights in the room(Pitch black). Hold the light nearly touching the egg kindof to the side though(you have to be able to see the egg, so don't set the flashlight on top of it). If the egg looks yellowish it is probably bad. If it is reddish pink it should be good. As time goes the egg will be darker in color when you candle it(the baby taking up space).
Thanks. It is very pinkish. This is my first attempt at breeding phelsuma. I've had a male for over a year but no female till recently. My local pet store had a terrarium with a breeding pair and a frog in it. I traded three of my baby corns for the terrarium and critters. 2 weeks later, I have eggs. I could tell the female was gravid when I obtained them so I felt like it was a win-win situation for me. By the way, I immediately removed the frog and gave it to my wife.
Dude what kind of corns do you have?!? Not that I want them but my buddy gets corns for about $20 each and you seem to have gotten a hell of a deal! What kind of frog?(I like frogs!)
My corns are basically just candy canes. Mother is albino, father is a blizzard. The babies look like an albino with more and brighter white. Nothing too special. The frog is a gray bark tree frog, I think. I'm not into frogs much, that's why I gave it to my wife. She loves frogs.
Sounds like a great deal you got now you just have to wait the 40-60 days that is the toughest. Cool that you wife is into frogs mine has NO interest in any critters!
My wife was the manager of the local pet store I supply when I met her. Our two year anniversary is in 9 days. She loves herps too. Even loves going to the expos with me.
