Default Eating babies?

So I have taken apart my Phelsuma pasteuri enclosure 3 times looking for eggs. There might be 2 sets. I only finally found one of them.

I don't believe I am going to remove them as I have to break out the drill and also worry about the adults escaping. Does anyone know if this species will consume its babies? I know that Gekko species typically do not, and from what I can tell P klemmeri does not either.

Well I took the eggs out this morning. Suprised to find 6 eggs! I thought I was losing my mind over the last couple months. She would seem very gravid. Then no eggs. Ahhh

Congrats! It's always exciting finding eggs. I have a few geckos that are very skilled at hiding eggs and even better hiding when they are laying.

I've learned that if they go from fat to skinny and it looks like they laid, even if I can't find a single egg, they are there somewhere.

My pair is fairly young. I was thinking that maybe she was laying duds and eating them. It is going to be fun waiting for eggs to hatch when I have no clue when they were laid

So I am still curious about Phelsuma eating their babies. Anyone with any experience on having babies in the adults enclosure?

In the past I have kept Phelsuma dubia with adults. hatched out in the tank and raised with the parents. Never lost one. Ive heard and seen pictures of P.standingi hatchling with adults. But have never done so myself.

I have found it's very unpredictable which Phelsuma species will or will not eat their young. Sometimes it seems that the enclosure, food provided, and environment effect if a parent will eat it's young. Cleaver hatchlings can evade hungry parents.

I have witness P. barbouri, P. laticauda. eat their young. I've had inexpectata and ornata young disappear but don't know if there were eaten or not. ....too many Phelsuma species to remember which do or don't..... I just advise to remove eggs when ever possible. Too much time and effort is put into getting those eggs to have them eaten in the first five minutes after they hatch.

I've also removed gravid females so they can they eggs in a different enclosure. After they lay eggs I return them to their "breeding" enclosure with mate.

Safer than sorry.

Always remove eggs if you can or cover them.any phelsuma will eat newly hatched young, there is no parental care.Adults will eat the young. Its more luck that people have found babies in the vivaria with adults.
