Default advice please on pairing laticauda (golddusts) together

Hi all,

Need some advice please, a year ago I had to separate a male and female laticauda which were not getting on to well together. I now wish to try pairing them again and need any helpful advice.

could I just place the male into the tank of the female or should i capture one of them and rearrange their tank and place both into it. However I have read that you need to clean everything before reintroduction, how can i clean the plants.

The easy way for me to do this is just to add the male into the female enclosure but would this be wise. It was the male that was showing aggression before.

Any help would be great, Thanks

Hello

I have a Phelsuma l Laticauda, and even if I cant answer your q, I would just like to tell you, that my male ate my female (same size, only 1 week apart in age), so IF you have seen aggression issues before, I am not sure I would be brave enough to re introduce them...eventhough it WAS a great meal and he DID have a bit of a growth spurt after that...

Kind regards

WOW! Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

I keep Gold Dusts and have been quite successful breeding my pair. What is the size of the enclosure you keep/kept them in before the fighting? The pair I have together have been together since I got them nearly a year ago and have never had any issue with them(knock on wood, everyone please!!!). I keep them in a 60 gallon hex(I will attach a picture). I have heard about and seen aggression though out of this species. My babies typically don't get along for long, but I am figuring this to be because of the size of the containers I use for hatchlings.

As far as advice goes:
You could try to put the male in with the female. I did this with my Phelsuma pasteuri. After I watched the male chase the female around like crazy. And after a month I put him back in with the female and it worked very very well. Keep in mind though their enclosure is also very large(Another picture-the dresser).

You could get a bigger enclosure(this is why I asked how big yours was) or you could have 2 males or females(are you sure you have a male and female?) or you could just have an incompatible pair.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply to me. Very sorry missie to hear about your experience, not good at all.

I have the male in an exo terra 18 x 18 x 18 inch at the moment and the female is in exo terra 24 x 18 x18 inch which is the same one they were both in together before removal of male. I don't think there is any problem with the size of the female tank for a pair and it is heavily planted and bambooed. I believe in natural viv set up and to be honest in the UK you need it to maintain humidity due to having to heat the set ups which is costly to humidity. so there is plenty of cover and places for the pair to get away from each other.

I think I may go for trying the male back in with the female in her tank and see from there. If that does not work them I suppose i will have to try a rearrangement of the tank, then female first followed by male later. Advice seems a bit short coming really so thats all i can think to do. Thanks again.

Lack of replies because you know exactly what options you have already

I agree with your order of things to try. If you rearrange the tank add new things/plants to help make it a "new" territory. I would not wait long to put the male in either. The longer you wait the more problems you might have(female being aggressive)(which I don't think will happen). But if both fail the last thing you could do is get a bigger enclosure. Or get a new male and female and have 2 possible pairs
