Default UPDATE: Phelsuma Standingi Vivarium

Hello everyone! I just wanted to drop by and show off some how my Phelsuma Standingi Viv is looking, I've added two more plants since my first post and it definitely adds more dense jungle look too it, and I'm very surprised that humidity stays as low as it does (Standingi don't care for as much humidity). I also included a pic of Sobe, hes growing quite fast! I'm very proud of this viv since it was my first and I am currently tackling two other projects; a huge leopard gecko viv, and a 24"x18"x24" exo terra which will either be the future home of Sobe and his/her mate, or house a Giant Day Gecko.

Thanks for looking,
Austin

-And if anyone is wondering what the last picture is that is my homemade reflector for my fluorescent tubes. There is one 5.0 and one 2.0 hooked up to the Exo-Terra Dawn/Dusk simulator; its not much of a sunrise/sunset but its still pretty cool since it has a built in timer and they're externally ballasted. I also cut 2 holes in the refletor where I have a zoo-med dual dome fixture which has a 50 watt halogen in one side and a purple night light in the other. The reflector works awesome and was so easy and cheep to make, I do need to do some touch-ups though.

Why the reason for the night light? They are day, not night active.

Because my room is in the basement of my house and in the winter it gets really cold, I have to bring in a space heater even when the heat is on to stay warm

I would use a heat pad to remedy that, if you use a night light you risk keeping the geckos up at night which will destroy their day night rhythm.

In here we had to install a shade that comes in front of the tank section of the room because even if they see monitor light they wake up. :P

I don't have a bedspread anymore.. I donated it to my phelsumas this summer when I realized that the blinds were not enough to keep the light out and all my other blankets were too small to cover the tank. But what wouldn't you do for the ones you love?

I actually have used a space heater for the past few years to keep the room temperatures up. I lived in a house in FL that did not have a/c or heat(loved the window unit!!) and for a couple months at night it got to cold. Now back in Atlanta in the basement(as well!) with winter coming my space heater might go back into use. I have so many lights now my room is really warm.

Maureen, have you noticed any reduced breeding or health due to excess light at night?
