My Giant Day Gecko has a Hernia?!?! HELP!
I came home from class earlier to see this! I'm pretty darn sure it wasn't like that this morning. I literally just got the 2 female madagascar giant day geckos on Sunday and moved them from a plain and dirty 18 x 18 x 24 exoterra to a 24 x 18 x 24 super tropical exoterra. I was told this one was about 2 years old and the other is a year and a half.
This can't be normal??
I saw her lick at it a few times but it doesn't seem to be coming off or anything. What the heck could it be??
It doesn't seem to actually be bleeding, but as you can see its Really red like blood vessels or something. What could have caused this???
I attached pictures as I have no idea what I'm dealing with here. Please help??

That is a prolapsed hemipene. Looks pretty good I would just try putting some triple a or vasaline, or even preparation h on it to see if it will go in by itself. Dont be stingy with the lube either lol. If it doesn't recede on its own you may need to use a qtip with one of those "lubricators" on it to gently push it back in to the base of the tail. If you are uncomfortable doing that a vet would be able to do it quite quickly.
By the way CONGRATS you have a boy not a girl.

You can also try giving it a sauna in some lukewarm water with sugar mixed in.
But if it doesn't retract by the end of the day, you need to get the gecko in to a vet.

Hahaha!! Hello, you have a Male right there. And it most likely just mated with your female. They lick at it after they are done mating and it receeds and goes back in. sometimes it takes a while.. When I first saw it on my male I thought he had bloody feces. Also it might seem bloody which who knows it might actually be a little, he is cool. Like lauraleel said - If it doesn't go back in by itself by the end of the day take him to the Vet. Also use the search tool and look for "giant day gecko sexing" or "Phelsuma grandis sexing" to get an understanding of how to tell the difference of a male and female. btw that would be hemmeroid if it was not a hernia lol. keep us posted please!

Really??? He's for sure for sure not a girl?? I guess it would kind of make sense, since I got 2 of them together. It was a craigslist thing. The guy said he had bought them both as subadults and had had them together for a year and a half or so. He said they got along fine. But he thought they were both females. The other gecko is definitely smaller though, and I read that prolapsed hemipenes usually come after sexual interaction... The guy never mentioned anything about eggs, though.
Anyway, does this kind of thing recur a lot? Does it often go away on its own? I read the replies at school so I rushed home on my lunch break with a giant bag of sugar and some prep h all ready to go, just to find him looking fine! He won't actually let me get a GOOD view of it... (felt like a perv chasing him around the cage. "show me your vent!!") but yesterday he wouldnt even lower his tail and it was kind of obvious. Today I can't notice anything from my vantage points, and he's completely lowered/flattened onto bamboo perches. So I'm hoping it went away on its own? I'll keep trying to get a better look/picture though.
Thank you guys SO MUCH for your replies!! I was so so worried, after reading about other geckos dying from this sort of thing...

Lol yes it is a guy.. Just wait to see when he gets on the glass or move your heat source towards the glass so you can get him to move where you can see it.. then when you see it put the heat back where it was. haha not a perve just worried about your gecko is all and yes take more pics if you can and when you get the chance take pics of their vents and we will be able to help you identify the pores that determine what the sex is. one more thing you said the previous owner said nothing about eggs. did you just buy the geckos seperately or with the enclosure as well?

I bought them together, with an 18 x 18 x 24 exo terra complete with 4 magnaturals ledges, a plant, a night light, and uvb light. It was reeaaally dirty, though. With not much for plants and no backgrounds. He also said he just fed them strawberry applesauce and just dusted their crickets so I'm trying to wean them onto repashy now.
I already had 2 uvb lights, a 24 x 18 x 24 exo terra, and 3 other ledges so I just added all the extra stuff from him to what I already had.
I will definitely post pics of both their vents, and my set up!
Thanks again! Guess I'm gonna have to rename him, lol.

Yeah sounds to me like you saw him just after possibly mating (or masturbating- male geckos do that on a regular basis as well). If you could get pics of the vent area on both of them, that should help with sexing.
If they're getting along fine chances are very good that you have a m/f pair, however.
Any clue if they're related?
The good news is that at a year in half in age, both should be sexually mature.

I suppose its possible but I don't think anyone could know... he said he got them shipped in from the florida breeder... something like giantdaygeckos.com? I kind of believe him cuz they're sooo pretty.
They can't be from the same clutch, at least. He said the "big one" was about 2 years and the "little one" was about a year and a half. "Big one" was the one with the prolapse. Maybe this was just the first time they've mated due to being too young before? He had them together for as long as he had them. I'm attaching a vent pic of "little one", a pic of my habitat, and a face pic of little one. As soon as he cooperates I'll post vent pics of big one.

Nice looking terrarium. That looks like a female to me, I have no fully grown females yet though so maybe somebody else will confirm.
I got 2 of my giant day geckos from giantdaygecko.com. They are very well taken care of and have great coloration.
