I wasn't sure where to put this as I can't seem to find a spot for general husbandry. I recently got some Gold Dust Day Geckos (Phelsuma laticauda laticauda) and was given a tip by the previous owner who breeds them.
I have been using 40W-100W bulbs to raise the ambient temperature of my enclosures as well and try and give a hot spot at the correct temps. He's been using small undercabinet halogen lights to do the same job that are approx. 3.5" diameter and 20W each. The only drawback to these lights is the hot spot is very localized and doesn't raise the ambiant temp much but then I guess this would give your reptile a larger range of temps to choose from. I've started using these in combination with fluorescent lighting and under tank heaters to slightly raise ambiant temps. While the ambiant temps seem a bit low the temperature significantly rises near and under the light of the halogen. I've also been thinking of covering half of the screening at the top of the enclosure to trap more heat in if necessary.
Here is a link to the ones I purchased ...
Fixtures - Set of 3 Halogen Light Fixtures SHANGHAI ELECT.APPAR - Rona.ca. Not only do these give a nice hot spot in the enclosure they will save me a bundle in electric bills. They are also different brands with varying colours and wattages. Each light in this 3-pack has it's own plug and came with an extension cord with a switch on it.
So I think that this is a great alternative to my previous lighing. I can't use these for my all screen chameleon enclosures but they work great on small gecko enclosures. And I suppose if I wanted to raise the temps a bit more these are so small I could have 2 hot spots in one enclosure and still only be using 40W of electricity.
Anybody here use anything similar to these?
