alright so i've seen heat tape recommended a few times and wondering what the deal is with it. it it the stuff you can pickup at the hardware store or is something else? also how do you put it together? pictures would help alot

The heat tape that most of us use is flexwatt. You will need to have a somewhat basic knowledge of wiring and a controller (thermostat or rheostat) of some sort to use it. There's a ton of people/retailers that sell it. Look here: Kingsnake.com Classifieds > Heating/Lighting/Thermometers & Other Metering
Many of them include instructions on how to put it together.
