Hi all,

I am about to start construction on a naturalistic terrarium for a pair of golden geckos (G. ulikovskii/badenii). I have been looking for some scientific articles on their habitat in Vietnam, but I haven't been able to find much. I am assuming that their niche is arboreal, on trees and branches in the jungle. If I am mistaken, please let me know.

My basic layout:

1.) Greatstuff background with imbedded cork rounds for hiding spots (will they be able to climb on the cocofiber?)

2.) Some horizontal branches, 2-3" diameter, of sticking out of the background at varying angles.

3.) Various plants imbedded in the substrate and background to enhance hiding spots/ increase climbing areas.

Let me know what you think. Thank you.

Extensive Natural Hybridization Between Two Geckos, Gekko tawaensis and Gekko japonicus (Reptilia: Squamata), Throughout Their Broad Sympatric Area.
Abstract
The status of natural hybridization between the two Japanese geckos, Gekko tawaensis and Gekko japonicus, was surveyed by use of 15 diagnostic allozyme loci. Of 438 specimens examined, 9 were identified as F(l), 1 was a first backcross with G. japonicus, and 15 were identified as more successive generations. Hybridizations were detected at 7 of the 15 localities interspersed throughout a broad sympatric area of the two species, forming a mosaic hybrid zone. A comparison of species-hybrid composition between 2-year samples from a single locality and a 5-year interval showed no evidence for progressive introgression or establishment of a hybrid swarm, despite constant emergences of F(l) hybrids. Nonprevalence of the hybrid genotypes was also indicated by the analysis using hybrid index scores for all other localities examined. These results suggest that strong selection acts against hybrid genotypes. Morphological features of hybrid individuals were also provided.

About 3 weeks ago i received a golden gecko from one of my friends clients. it was previously kept in a leopard gecko enclosure for most of its life because of an unexpierenced owner. The gecko was obviously pretty ill when i received it due to lack of humidity and nutrients most of its life. Right now i have it in a 20 gallon (long) tank with an auto mister to keep hydration between 60 and 80%. he has lots of plants and vines to climb on and is now finally eating well and climbing around rather than laying on the floor of the tank. Unfortunatly i believe the geckos toe pads where damaged from its poor conditions in the past, and now he cant climb glass. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to move him to an all screen terrarium that i have sitting around so that he can grip and climb the sides. should i do this? or save him the stress and leave him in the tank hes in. any thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Hey all,

thanks for all the help in my last thread. my gecko is growing fatter, less defensive to my intrusions, and -I hope - happier. Now I am starting to build a big, final tank for him and probably a female down the road. I am going to buy the glass and assemble it myself to save money. I was thinking dimensions of 48"T x 36"W x 20" deep... sound good?

I am pretty sure about the dimensions, but not on what glass pieces I need; what is the optimal ventilation, you think? I am going to have a misting system and uvb lamp on top, so obviously need the top to be screen, but do y'all think the entire top should be screen, or only a portion of it? and is top ventilation and nothing else enough for a tank this tall? I worry that maybe the bottom part of the tank will get too humid (although I will have a heat cord on part of the bottom and side of the tank)

If this should be in another sub-forum, feel free to move it or let me know, thanks!

Hello,

i ve had a couple of eggs laid last month, daytime temperature is around 30 °c with peaks of 34 °c and a drop at 24°c at night. humidity is provided by a misting system set every hour , it varies between 50 % and 85 %. i know that tokay eggs can take up to 200 days to hatch.
in my situation, are these settings going to speed up the incubation process ? if so , does a short incubation have an impact on the condition of the hatchlings or vice versa ?

merci !

Hey.... I have kind of been receiving a lot of comments telling me things that I do wrong for my geckos. I try and no one really cares >:-( :-x >:-(

Anyway, I am trying to help my male golden gecko Starflight!? His temps are usually 78-92 F. Humidity is usually 55-80%. He is in a 10-gallon glass aquarium with leaves, a large-ish rock, a heat pad on the side (7 watts double heat pad), lizard litter substrate, a few branches and a lamp with just a regular light in it that I only use to "show him off." Lately, he has been laying on the ground a lot, starting 2 days ago. (Tuesday.) The leaves are from my backyard. I washed them with soap and water. Anyways, he could be in bad health? My other thread about him (New Golden Gecko from Orlando Repticon!!!) is about him. I just want heath tips- and I have not seen him eat ANYTHING or drink anything in the past 1 1/2 weeks altough he's gained 2 grams. What should I do? I really don't have enough money for the vet and I really don't want to loose him. If it's very serious I might be able to get enough money to go to the vet but I REALLY don't have anything. Please help!!!!

Well first off a I have planted Viv : Rock's/Drainage layer & Mesh & Eco-Earth, Ground up Moss mix, Tiny bit of clay/Substrate & Leaf Litter. And I just noticed these TINY White/Clear "Mite's?" that come up and feed on Poo, Dead Crix and sometime's the Leaf litter. As far as I can tell they have never gotten on Toke and do not bother her. These are NOT Spring Tail's, and as far as I know not Isopod Nymph's. I do have about 400 Isopod's in the Substrate and I've seen their Nymph's, and you can tell they are Isopod's. But these are the size of Mite's, super Tiny! And my Substrate smell's like poo kind of, it just stink's. I thought the Micro-Fauna would eliminate any smell?? And are these little Mite's Natural Substrate Micro-Fauna??

Hey everybody! I am new to this site, and to the world of geckos. After many years and many arachnids, I decided to diversify my collection and picked up a Tokay off an acquaintance who was not caring about it or for it. I have him set up in a temporary enclosure while I sort out what I really need here, with the help of you fine people. I have a lot of questions..

The first one, about feeding. I have a roach colony from which I feed my tarantulas (B. giganteus). Because not much is known about tarantula nutrition, and rumors that calcium is not good for them, I have never gut loaded before. I bought a separate bin to start doing this for my gecko, and I am going to follow the recipe in Maurice's gut-loading sticky in the feeder forum. I read all I could find on this topic, but I am confused about a couple things. One, since this recipe contains calcium + D3, can I assume this meets requirements and I don't have to dust them with the powder (which is what I do for my turtle)? I also have reptile vitamin powder, do I still have to dust with this? If so, how often?

I have had this guy for four days. He was stressin' out and I left him alone for a couple days, but since then I have tried twice to feed him, with roaches and mealworms and he has not gone for either. Is this normal... in how long would not eating become an issue? I was trying to tong-feed, I worry that if i let the roaches loose in the enclosure they will hide :/

Now about humidity and heat. The temporary enclosure has coconut fibre and husk with moss on top as substrate, a couple plants, and plenty of vertical hiding spots. Right now it is just being heated to about 85 degrees with a regular (not UV) light bulb, but I worry that this light might be stressing him out and drying the enclosure out too quickly; I've been misting a lot, but the droplets on the side and the moss seem to be dry in less than a half hour. But i've been keeping the coco stuff moist, there are springtails living in it.

Is this alright as a temporary enclosure for maybe a few weeks until I can upgrade him to a way bigger and better tank?

I have more questions about the final enclosure but this is already so long and I'll let you guys answer these questions for now:blushing:

Thanks so much!
