That's a general rule for most gecko species. Unfortunately, my gecko rebels against human interaction by lodging himself inside his plastic tree. I go to get him in the mornings, and he is always (predictably  ) in the tree  I've gotten to him once or twice when he's on the ground, but he is sooooo tiny (about 2inches long) that he can dart out of my palm because I don't want to squish or stress him by trapping him in my hand. (He's a docile captive bred species)
Handling really depends on the personality of your gecko
If your gecko is allowing you to hold it in the mornings, then definitely hold it.
