Default Substrate or towels for Tokays

I have a growing collection of Tokay Geckos and currently house them in Exo Terra Terrarium's. What do you guys use as a substrate? Have you found any workable alternatives to forest bedding etc.... taking into account crickets getting under paper towels and not being found by the tokays. Very interested to hear ideas???

Thanks in advance

I use peat moss in every tank I have. Best of all its cheap and if they happen to eat a little it wont do anything to their insides. I dont really change substrate so it lasts forever. Over here you can buy a 3 cubic meter compressed bag of it for like 10-15 bucks and it goes a looooong way. Just check out a gardening store.

Hi Blake

Thanks for the info... you say you don't really change substrate so do you just spot clean or can you turn it over and find that it deals with itself 'type' thing?

I see you have some CB tokay's for sale... if only you were closer

Thanks again

There is some bugs you can get that feed on feces, left over food, dead bugs, and so on. I dont have any I need to get some though. I just let it go and when I really need to I'll spot clean so maybe every few months pick some out but for the most part the only time I really change is when I move animals and put them in new cages. Paper towel would work but I find it more of a pain than anything because your changing it every few days and its hard to keep the humidity up with paper towel as well. Just personal preference I guess.

I use a organic potting soil. It works great and holds humidity in really well. I dont like using towels as substrate unless I have to just throw a quick cage together and need to put something in the bottom.

EcoEarth compressed coconut fibre. Great stuff, I love it. Again it comes in an expandable brick and you let it soak for about a half hour, then throw it in the tank. It's very easy to spot clean or you can do as Blake does. I find it much better than paper towels for anything aboreal because it is SUCH a pain to take out all the vines/plants/hides and everything else every few days, you can't really spot clean it, and it doesn't hold humidity.

Thanks Siz, I'm gonna try this method at the weekend.
