Male
Default Considering Gekko vittatus

I recently saw an ad on my local craigslist for someone selling a Gekko vittatus for $18. Here is the link: Skunk Tail Gecko He says he is just running out of room and it is an adult male. I think I'll give him a call and ask him how old it is, if it is captive bred, and how is it currently cared for.

I have no experience in Gekko, so I have a few questions about G. vittatus.

Would a 10g turned on its side be a good sized enclosure for a single vittatus? If not, would a 20g high be good?

Do Gekkos like the food ledges that Rhacodactylus owners use?

Is reptile (fir) bark a good substrate for these geckos?

Does crickets, phoenix worms, and silkworms sound like a good diet for a vittatus? Would mealworms, wax worms, baby food, and crested gecko diet be good occasional treats?

What is a good temperature range for them? If I do the 10g on its side, would a heat pad attatched to the top of the back be a good heat source?

How handleable are these geckos? I'm not looking for "bearded dragon friendly" but would it be okay to take out every once in a while to show off? I've heard they aren't as aggressive (sp?) as tokays, is this true?

Hey ff5k,

First off, I think G. Vittatus is a great gecko. They're a very hearty gecko with great personality. They are skittish, however, and can be little buggers when you need to handle them. However, as a show pet, I think they're great.

as far as your questions, the 20 gal would be a must. He'll do fine in the 10 gal as a temporary enclosure, but not as a permanent. I found that they will eat off of just about anything, from food ledges to plants, even off the ground. They will eat crckets and meal worms and some will eat CGD. Mine rarely touch the stuff, but I've heard that others do. The heating pad on the back is the way I have mine set up and they seem to be near it and enjoy it quite a bit. as far as temp ranges, I keep mine aroun 82*F day and low to mid 70's at night. You just need to make sure your substrate will help humididty. my Relative Humididty in my house is quite low, so I have to Draceana and a pothos in mine, as well as a DIY humidifier. You can find info on accomplishing all these things on this website if you search. I'm on the run right now or I'd post links, but it shouls be easy enough to find. If you do decide to purchase this guy, I'm certain you won't be disappointed.

PM me if you have any more questions, I's be glad to help!
