Default Tokays - Just how loud are they?

Hi All

I'm considering getting a pair of Tokays but just wanted people's opinions on just how loud they can be?

They would be kept in my room but it's not me being disturbed that i'm concerned about (i sleep like a log, it would take a bomb going off to wake me up and even then i think i would struggle) but it's more my folks being woken up by late night calling that worries me!

During the night my door is closed (it's solid wood, not flimsy hollow plyboard stuff) but do you think people in other rooms would be disturbed if they start getting a bit vocal in the early hours?

Any advice from current noisy Tokay owners would be most appreciated!

Cheers!

From a current Tokay owner to a prospective one....

I have my 1.2 group of Tokays in my room, and cant recall having been woken up by them. I can vouch for the sound being very loud for the animal that makes it,and that it can be heard thru the house. I think it is awesome personally, and smile everytime I hear it.

Took my family a while to figure out what all the screaming/babies wailing/ F U noises were coming from though...

Thanks for the info Timm.

I really like their bad attitude and the noises that go with it too, i think it makes them all the more entertaining but my dad has to be up for work at 4am everyday and he's never a happy camper if he gets woken up, i don't think he would share my enthusiasm!

I don't think it should be too much of an issue though as i should hopefully be moving out reasonably soon anyway (then my girlfriend will have to live with it )

Out of interest how often do they call? Is it just a seasonal thing (breeding time) or do they call all year round?

You are welcome.

My male called before I added females, and continues to do so. (I cant really tell you why, other than he gets the urge to sing sometimes, I suppose there is always a stimulus.

Better be careful, GF might not like it....might wind up looking for a new girlfriend!

The call is loud and you can usually hear it threw the house. But for the most part it is not all that bad. They will call for a few minutes (usually when the lights first go out) then they usually stop. Most of the calling usually happens in the spring and not so much the rest of the year, but each tokay is different and a male without a female might call longer looking for a mate.

My roomie had a Tokay that had run of the flat and we only got woken up like twice at about 3 AM by him calling, and it was only during the warmer months.
I too woke up wondering at first what that weird racket was, then I realized, and I laughed and went back to sleep.
I'm a really light sleeper for the record, and it just really cracked me up.
The call lasted about maybe 10 minutes at most? ( but I was half asleep and woke up to it, so I could be totally wrong on the length of time he had been calling. I remember the duration being short and only like once per night each time it happened.
Hilarious though.
You need a GF that loves Tokays!
