Default Flighty Tokays

Hi All

I finally bit the bullet and got myself a 1.1 pair of Tokays, they arrived last week safe and well from a reputable breeder and i'm over the moon with them!

They have been in their new home now for a few days and i have seen them both eat (and found a couple of MIGHTY poops aswell!) so all seems to be fine in that department.

I understand they are still settling in and it's early days at the moment but so far they have been extremely flighty, when i come into the room all you get is a scratching of feet and a flash of movement as they dissapear behind their bark. Will they become more sociable and accepting of me being around over time?

Also, the male seems to be a bit braver and more adventurous than the female (really haven't seen much if her at all!?) As he's coming out into the open a bit more now. Is this normally the case with males and females?

Thanks in advance for any info!

just give them a little time. i have an adult female who will stick to the front of her tank and usually only move if i stick my hand in and constantly poke at her. Although she dose spend a fair bit of time hiding during the day because they are nocturnal get a red light or heat lamp to see if they are more active in the dark. 10 mins after the lights go out mine is on the hunt. As for getting them used to you, try handling them. the more you do it the better they get. The only time mine gets real savage is if i go a while without handling her, other then that shes really good.

Thanks for the advice, i think i'm just being a little impatient! lol

I have left them alone to settle as much as possible apart from feeding and misting and i have been using a 75w night glo bulb to keep the temps up slightly at night and so i can see them if/when they decide to come out but so far i haven't seen that much of them.

I will give it a couple of weeks before i begin to risk my fingers and try handling them at all!

They seem to be feeding fine though, the male happily snatches crixs from a pair of tweezers (whilst hiding behind his cork bark though!) and has been eating well.

I will post up some pics soon once they have settled a bit and i can actually see them long enough to take a photo! lol

What exactly have you got them eating? Just crickets? Glad you had Good Luck with a reputable breeder, we got 2 w/c didn't know it at the time, I asked how long they had them and what they were eating ( unfortunately after I purchased them at a show) they Then said they had only had them for 3 1/2 weeks! But were eating. We never saw them eat once, and could NOT get them to eat. Lost them both. Sure wasn't for lack of trying! What have you got in your cage for a set-up? Also what temps have you got them at? Thanks.

I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your Tokays, unfortunately this seems to be all too common with WC Tokays, i hope you have better luck with any future ones!

I was very fortunate to come across a good breeder as CB Tokays seem to be a genuine rarity these days! It cost me quite a a bit more then going through a rep store but i'd used that breeder before and they were outstanding.

I have been feeding mine on a combination of large brown crickets and medium locusts and so far they appear to be eating and pooping well. Once they are more settled i will try a few treats of mealworms and waxworms on occasions but want to get them established on a staple diet first.

The male has started to become quite the explorer over the last couple of days and eats like a horse. Haven't seen much of the female still.

I have mine in a 24x18x24 exo-terra on eco earth substrate (this is on top of a layer of hydroton clay balls to aid humidity). For decor i use a couple of large hanging plants (exo-terra kind) on each side of the tank for climbing and hiding. Lots of thick vines and branches for climbing aswell. They also have a large sheet of cork bark to hide behind, large water dish (never seen them use it but seems to help humidity) and some rocks for decoration.

Temps are usually around 85f average during the day dropping to about 75-80f at night. Humidity ranges between 50-70%.

I'll try and post up some pics soon!

Hi All

It's been a couple of months now and i said i would post some pics on my last post but just haven't had the chance.

So here they are, my 1.1.0 Tokay pair and their current tank (will prob be upgrading to something a little bigger before the year is out)

As you can see they aren't very flighty anymore! This was about 8pm just after lights out (feeding time!)
