Unhappy Tokay with no voice ?

I got 1.1 pair or tokays 2 weeks ago, sadly there were in bad shape the male was to skinny you were able see all of his bones,he is doing better now,so far he eats good and has welcomed me and Q tip with warm water on to get the compacted shed of his toes on his back feet.the female is younger then the male she was not as bad.Hear my ?,the the male dose not have a voice he will puff up like he going to,mouth open ect. I can hear a little puff of air come out, that is it what causes this to happen?Oh ya I got them from a 12 year old boy who was scared of them or some thing. The must not have been feed enough.I did notice that the female is greedy at feeding time. any help will help thank you.

Maybe after he gains weight he will get to feeling better and bark the way he was meant to.

Hi

Congrats on your new Tokays, good luck with getting them back on track, it sounds like you got them just in time! Hope it all works out!

To try and answer your question; the whole "puffing" thing is pretty normal in my experience. My male does the same thing if you go near him when cleaning/feeding. He just puffs up and looks like he's breathing really heavily but makes very little noise.

The only time mine has actually barked at me is when i've misted with the water bottle and he got a bit of spray by accident and once when i tried to get my girlfriend to feed him using tweezers and she moved a little too fast towards him.

My female on the other hand won't even mess about with puffing and gapeing, she'll just nail you with a bite straight away! .

I wouldn't worry, i'm sure yours will find his voice and tell you off if he's really not happy about something!

The thing that I was amazed about was with his back foot that had the stuck shed, instead of picking him up I thought I wold try to do it wile he was on the side of his viv. he let me lift his foot up he left it up and let me clean it off.he looked confused watch me with his mouth open.the female was looking out for him,she has the whole time she loves him.The first week he was laying back in the corner on the ground, she was right above him watching over him I chould tell she was worrying about him.He doing better now though hanging wile he sleeeps.

Sounds to me like he's improving if he's moved from the bottom of the tank to the sides. If he's hanging upside down while sleeping that's generally a good sign too. If they're eating well then it seems like they're on the right track, keep up the good work!

I think you're right, a good male/female pair do seem to form bonds and look out for each other. My male gets very defensive of the female when i'm spot cleaning and they both sleep curled up together behind their bark during the day. The breeder who i bought mine from had them housed together for quite some time and when he seperated them for a while he said they both became far more agressive, he put them back together and they mellowed out again....

Hope yours keep improving, keep us updated!

Default good news

Well I have good news my new tokays are doing so much better can't see there bones no more they got it going on now,I even found them makeing love .still have not heard the males voice yet but his behavior is norm. for a tokay.I have A new ? there not showing any sings of mbd,so after being starved like that are they going to be able to breed.what kind of things should I watch for to insure they stay on the right track? and should I be worried about them trying to breed.

i'm glad to hear that they are doing so well now.
dont worry to much about that maiting thing.
it took mine more than three months to have sex and i don't hear my mails voice eather.
when he was with his first wife ( which died unfortunally) he let hear himself quit often but with thia female he just have sex and he doesn't make any noice at all.
just be happy that they are doing so well and the rest will come naturally.

Depending on her weight and calcium supply breeding could be something to worry about, as she might not be able to survive the pregnancy if she is still under weight (good weight is about 170-200g) and her calcium supply/reserves is not good.
