Default Tokay Info

L
Hey everyone I'm new here so u probably haven't seen me around but I'm here because I think I want my next lizard to be a gecko. the main one that caught my eye was the tokay. I was wondering if any of you could give me some info that you've learned from your experiance with them that you don't see in care sheets. I would also love to hear the best and worst things about owning a tokay. Thanks, Colin

Well first off, I dont own any tokays. But I know people who have them and read enough about geckos on this forum and elsewhere to tell you some important information:

1. The majority of tokay keepers agree that these can be very aggressive geckos with a painful bite. BUT, some say they have tamed their tokay to be 'puppy tame' and very friendly.

2. They are fairly big and active, which means you should have a fairly big cage for one, which needs heat and humidity.

3. They'll eat almost anything!

I would say that tokays are neither the beginner's reptile nor just for experts... probably "intermediate difficulty". There is a great guide to tokay geckos right on the home page of this website. You should read about all kinds of geckos before you make a decision. READ READ READ is the best advice I can give

I sort of disagree. Care wise they are beginner-moderate but if you are looking for a gecko to handle then I would look to get something else. Handling is a little more in the expert range but even the experts get nailed alot.

The best thing to learn about them is just go threw the forums and read read read.

I agree with pretty much everything that Cliff said. Reading through the previous posts in this forum will give you fantastic insight into what tokay keepers/breeders deal with. That's what it's here for. Once you've done some reading and have developed some specific questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks guys! Ive been doing a ton of reading...I feel like my eyes are going to fall out

Ive been bitten by just about everything lol so im not worried about that.

I have a friend who is selling a 20G tall (24 x 12½ x 17) and was wondering if this would be okay for a single tokay.

Thanks again for all your help guys and I will continue to ask questions.

I would say that would be a good temp cage for a young tokay. I would go with at least a 29g or bigger for a more permanent cage. With these bigger is always better.
