Default Tokay gecko died

I rescued a tokay gecko a few months ago. It seemed to be thriving but stopped eating. It had a hard time shedding this last time and it's eyes turned cloudy. I took it the vet a week ago. They kept it overnight, de-wormed it and gave me antibiotic drops to put in it's eyes. I was also force-feeding it Emeraid Carnivore. It died after 1 week. I would like to get another tokay but not sure what I did wrong. It was in a 40-gallon aquarium with repti-carpet on bottom, log, branches, fake plants, temp about 80F and humidity about 70%. Any ideas on why it died?

For starters, you said it was a rescue and had problems to begin with. You can't say it was you if you got unhealthy to start. Other than that, I would use a natural bedding over carpet (or paper towel if your determined to go simple) and have at least one hot spot of 88 for that size tank. You'd also be much better off getting a captive bred animal that won't be unhealthy.

Whenever you rescue immediately quarantine and rush a fecal sample to a vet. But this animal could have had a number of problems. When you are doing deworming always use paper towels. Everytime that animal poops it is spreading whatever parasites are in it's system so everytime a rescue goes to the bathroom I throw away pt bedding and sanitize the tank. Bleach diluted 1/20. 1 part bleach to 20 parts water. And I sanitize anything thats in the cage. Cage furniture, water bowel etc. Thus preventing reinfestation. But as a cb tokay breeder I will say: buy cb unless you are extremely knowledgeable about symptoms, and conditions of wc animals. Rescues are generally unwanted by the previous owners bc of whatever problems They are having. This is why we want to rescue them. But when they get sick it's not a sudden thing. Reptiles get sick slowly or at least show signs of it very slowly. It really to prevent predators from noticing and making a snack out of them. And when They do show signs it's generally in the very latest stages. So unless treatment is done early and aggesively things don't wind up going well. When you do get a rescue it's important to watch them like a hawk and know what to look for. Im sorry for your loss. I hope this helps in anyway.
