Default new guy -- pics

Hi there folks. Ethan directed me over here, and I am super grateful -- it's nice to find a community of people into tokays. One thing I have come to respect in particular is your photographic skill. I have yet to get mine to cooperate for photos, hence the low-quality ones I'm posting here. This is the male of a pair of high red imports I just purchased, in his stressed colors. When happy, his red bleeds through and he has no blue at all. In this case, he is hiding in some of the sweet bamboo I just got from Ethan, and the lighting is just his incandescent basking light. I love looking at the beautiful morphs posted here, and can't wait to get into more morphs.

Kris

Hi Kris, Welcome! I’m new to this forum as well and I agree there are some great photos and geckos. That is one sweet looking high red Tokay. I can imagine how awesome he must look fired up! Looking forward to more pics.

Hey Kris! Glad to see that you made it over here. That's a great looking male. Can't wait to see the female. When do you plan on putting them together? I'm really not much of a photographer myself. I've just learned that, when the opportunity presents itself, take as many pics as possible. Since there's no film/developing costs these days, I'll find myself taking 100 pictures in 10 mins. That way, at least a few of them will hopefully turn out to be good! I'm glad to see they're liking the bamboo. Mine love it and spend a lot of time in the tubes. The other upside to that is that it makes it easy to move them come cleaning time, etc without really disturbing them too much. Anyway, get some more pics up when you get the chance.

Hi Welcome!
Congrats on the gorgeous pick up! I can't wait to see what happens when he's lightened up!

Well, he's in a little better mood this morning. Not in his full red, but you can kinda tell the color's spreading a bit. His future girlfriend is much more shy and bolts for the bamboo every time I come into my reptile room. I'm going in and out a lot, trying to desensitize her, so hopefully she'll get used to it. I've had the two in quarantine since January and their fecals are clean, so I'll probably introduce them soon and see if we can get some nice red babies. I'm really excited to be able to begin speculating about this coloration - whether it's a locality thing or directly heritable. This will be my first attempt at breeding tokays (I usually stick to beardie morphs), so I'm hoping they feel motivated.

Well from my experience breeding them. Get ready for a ton of little demons. They breed like rabbits. I have to stop my girls from laying.

I hope you're right about them breeding prolifically. I just introduced them this afternoon, and he's been calling, so I hope that's a good sign. It's nice to have guidance from more experienced folks -- I bookmarked homegrownscales just the other day. I can't wait to see what babies you produce this year, and I hope it times out well with my wife's willingness to give me money.

On another note, I think I have found a possible solution to my photo problems, at least until they stop fleeing into the bamboo when I get close with a camera. I ordered a wireless remote for my camera, so I'm hoping that I can set up a tripod and get some ok pics, even if I can't get right in there to frame them like I want. Also, this remote has a timer function to trigger at intervals, so I may just set the camera up focused in the area they tend to bask, let it go, and see what I get. Once it arrives, I'll post results here.

And now the female. She's in her darkest stress colors, but you get the idea.

Kris, I think you're going to get some pretty hot looking babies out of that pair. Even if it's more of a locale thing and not a recessive gene, you're bound to get something more than normal from them. As for your remote camera idea, that should be awesome! A great way to get some pic of them without stress and more in their natural behavioral mode. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it.

Calling is a great sign! Youll know you're on the right track when he stops.  I can't wait to see some little guys. The female looks like the babies I get out of my sire Achilles. I think she's got more red. Which is awesome. Before you know it you'll have a ton of little guys running around and you won't know what to do! Hehehe.
