Hooray! My first Tokay baby!!!
What a surprise this morning when I saw this ultra cute little grey and orange lizard sticking on the glass of the tank. When it noticed me, it darted away into the vegetation, not to be seen again. But I know it's there...
So after only 71 days of incubation, one of the first three eggs that the female laid back in may hatched this night. I had a lot more waiting in mind, so I was totally not expecting this to happen so soon!!!
Now I have eight more eggs to look forward to hatching....
But for now - I'm just soooo happy and sooooo proud!
My first home-made Tokay
Jippy!!!

Congrats! It seems really fast for incubation though.

Well, we're more than 24 hours later now, and apart from the first brief encounter with the baby, I haven't seen it again. I've searched the tank with a flashlight, but it's nowhere to be found.
As stated earlier, I provide the animals with lots of plants and other hiding places, so it's possible that I simply can't find a well hidden animal. And they sure are small.
But I'm starting to get worried...
I think three thing could have happened:
1) the little one has been eaten by one of the parents. It would surprise me, because both of them protect the eggs so well.
2) it has died in one of the hiding spots... when I saw it, it looked healthy and "complete", and it sure was fast, but 71 days seems like a very short incubation time... maybe the baby was born premature? Is that even possible with animals that have to hatch from an egg?
3) the little dragon is a master of disguise. I really *really* hope this is the case. Does anyone know if these newborns stay hidden so well just after they're born? I expected the animal to come out in the evening or at night. I got out of bed a couple of times last night to check but it was nowhere to be found. All that got me was a bad night of sleep...
Anyway - I sure hope this story has a happy end - this evening I plan on doing a thorough search through the tank, just to make sure he/she's ok...
Keep your fingers crossed!

Any of those options could be true. I hope that it's just hidden well. You might consider pulling it out of there if you find it alive. Better safe than sorry I say.

As for the quick incubation time is it possible the female was gravid without you knowing and has laid eggs much earlier than you noticed?
In any case, congratulations on your home-made tokay!

Hello,
To the idea that she was gravid when you got her and the first eggs were there before you saw them, it happens all the time.
If this was true, then the current male in the enclosure is not the Toklings' dad, which means he ate it. Now, if the other eggs came much later, like 35 days or more, then those hatchlings will probably be his and they should all get along for a while.
I have had this happen twice this year, and the current hatchlings are doing fine with their parents but we did lose the first ones that were from eggs laid early.
Good luck,
Michael
