Default Need help/advice!

Ok. I just wanted to start stating that I have quite a few ? on this matter, so I apologize if this is a long post. I posted a while ago about some unexpected tokay eggs that my tokay laid. Took some advise and left them alone to see if they were fertile. Turns out that they were because I had one hatch either today or yesterday. Still waiting on the other two. Got a good look at him/her tonight and it looks pretty healthy and all together.

Ok. Now with the ?. Do you think I should separate it from the momma tokay? Not so much worried that she will eat it, but worried that its in to big of a cage. Read that this could be stressful to any reptile and it may be hard to find food.

How much and how often should I feed it? How small does the prey actually need to be? How much should a healthy hatching actually eat? The local pet stores smallest crickets were about a half inch. Thought that this might be to big. Would small dubia roaches be ok?

How often should I dust prey with Calcium/d3 and vitamins?

Would some apple sauce or some kind of baby food be ok for awhile? Thats what the pet store owner suggested. I didnt think this sounded right but I thought I would ask.

Anyways thats all for now. Appreciate any advice people could give. I know there are a lot of tokay people on this forum so thats good. Super stoked to be raising this little guy.

Congrats!

You should be able to leave the babies with the mom if you'd like or remove them. I've seen and read a lot that the adults don't eat the babies.

Food. Half inch crickets are way too big. Try to find something that is smaller than the geckos head. If you can contain(in a bowl maybe) small dubia roaches they'd probably work well. It might be easier to remove the babies and feed them seperately from the mom.

Never tried fruit type meals with the Tokays, but apparently some will eat some will not. You could try.

Here is a useful link for you!

I say dust the food every time for nearly the first year. Growing babies need the extra calcium.

Congrats on the baby. I personally pull the babies and put them in small enclosures. This allows me to easily keep track of them and how much they're eating, gaining weight, etc. Others leave them with the parents for a while. Both techniques work. You have to decide which makes you more comfortable.

As for feeders, dusted and gut loaded small crickets or roaches are fine. No baby food.

You can seperate it from the mom tokay. I suggest you do. Also in regards to feeding once everyday after the first shed. Do not feed them a lot, only what they will consume, generally small crickets.

Ok. So how small of tank should I put it in. I will probably leave it with the momma for a few days just to let it get used to being alive. i have a spare 10 gal. tank and another tank thats about 2'long 1' wide and 1.5' tall. Any tips on how to catch the little guy? The mommas in a pretty big tank and she is not the friendliest.

Thanks for the advice. Will keep you guys posted and will try to get some pics.

10 gal is good enough for the baby. Use a fish net or a towel or glove to pick up the baby.

Ok cool. So Just got home from work and was looking around the cage to try to find the little guy. so cute. a lot smaller than expected. Well decided to check the other eggs and sure enough another one hatched. Not more than two days apart.

would it be ok to put both the hatchlings in a smaller tank or should I have both of them separate? Worried about bulling and so forth.

And is it cool to just make the tank/s as simple as possible? I was thinking paper towels and two maybe tree small pvc tubes. Was going to cover back and sides with newspaper. not to pretty, but cheep. Just worried about the humidity with the use of paper towels.

Put them together. If you start to notice that one is growing a lot faster than the other(s) it should be seperated. They shouldn't actually fight(damage) until they are closer to maturity if at all.

The 10 gallon will be fine for both your hatchlings. Is there a reason why you want to use newspaper? You do not have any left over mulch or moss from your other tokay's cage laying around. Only reason is you want to make them comfortable. Pipes will Allow hiding and climbing.

For hatchlings, I use little 16 cup/4 liter cube shaped "gladware" type containers with holes in the top for ventilation. I get them at Walmart for like $1 each. Because I can put as few or as many holes as I want, it makes it easy to control humidity. I use paper towel in the bottom so that I can monitor pooping and also so that the babies can find their prey with ease. I use either bamboo cut to size or paper towel/toilet paper rolls for hides. Again, I keep mine individually so that I can make sure everyone is eating and gaining weight with no issues. But you can keep them together if you really want to. When they get bigger, I move them up to individual ten gallon tanks converted to vertical vivs. And then of course larger enclosures the bigger they get.
