Default help with my tokay gecko.

i have a pretty aggressive 8 or so inch tokay gecko in a 40 gallon hex tank. i am not sure of his sex.
i was just wondering if he could have a tank mate or two in this tank? it looks a bit empty with just him in there.

it would be nice if someone could catch me up on all the new gecko lingo. i know pretty much nothing but the basic stuff. right now im running just one of those blue daylight bulbs and a nighttime bulb all through night. the lid only has about a 7x7 inch vent at the top that my light is over so it gets very hot and humid in the tank and im hoping thats good. the gecko seems very happy and i have lots of plants and branches for him to climb on. and he eats like a pig.

Tokay's tend to be very social. I wouldn't put 2 males together but a male and 1-2 females would be fine. Look up "sexing tokays" or "sexing geckos" and you should get some photos of the vent area of male and female geckos. You'll basically be looking at the base of the tail.

Hot? How much so? Hot doesn't give enough detail to how warm it actually is in the tank. The more specific you can be with your questions and details the better the answers are going to be

Can you take any photos? Of the tank, top, and if possible CLEAR photos of the belly at the base of the tail. That is a good way to get some help sexing your gecko.

Let us all know if you have more questions!

Tokays don't tend to do very well in trios. The females will often eat each others eggs and offspring. A male and female OR two females by themselves will usually do ok. However, they're pretty territorial animals and some males can be overly aggressive and will not tolerate even a female in their territory. So be prepared to move them into separate enclosure if that ends up being the case. Also, a 40 gallon tank probably isn't really big enough for 3 adult tokay. So I'd stick with no more than two personally.

do they do well with other species of animals? like if i were to add 2 or so larger anoles to the setup would they get eaten? i have some pics of the setup and the lizard in my introduction thread but no pics of the base of the tail. i cant even pick him up without him biting me.

also as in hot im guessing its anywhere between 80-90 degrees in there and very humid and muggy. i do not have a thermometer so i dont know the exact temp but i am purchasing one today.

No don't put them with other species. Anything that will fit in their mouth will be considered food. And back to the aggression-they might fight with whatever else you put in there.

The guessing part is bad. Good thing your getting a thermometer I recommend a digital thermometer. The analog ones tend to stop working.

Most digital ones have an outdoor probe that can be moved around. This can be helpful since your tank is fairly tall. The one on your tank is probably reading correctly. Basically the glass in that spot of the tank is 83 but no telling what the temps are at the bottom or closer to the light.

You really need to get yourself a decent digital thermometer. You can pick one up for around $10 at Home Depot, etc. If you want your animal to thrive, you need to be able to care for it properly. Mixing species is not recommended in general, but even less so with tokay. As mentioned above, most anything you put in with a tokay will will likely end up being killed. Reptiles are not like people. In general, they do not seek out "friends". As mentioned above, photos of your set up would help greatly in determining what might be lacking.

yes, its towards the lower half of the tank so im guessing it gets hotter the farther up. but there are not many branches towards the top so if its really hot he cant even get up there.
