Landlord lives upstairs, is a Tokay too loud?
My boyfriend and I have done a lot of research and REALLY want a Tokay gecko. I have watched videos of the call (which is very cute btw), and searched through forums enough to know that they are "loud". But "loud" is very relative of course.. We aren't worried about the noise for ourselves, but do you Tokay keepers feel the call could be heard in the 2nd floor of a house? We rent the 1st floor and the landlord lives upstairs. He's pretty cool but I would feel really bad waking him up at 3 AM with a barking gecko lol.

It's not anything you would have to worry about like that. It's loud but not THAT loud.

OK so, if your male Tokay is directly below his bedroom, depending on the insulation between floors, he might hear a muffled 'toKay' or 'geK-go' call if he listens very, very carefully in the weeee hours of the morning, maybe. And that would have to be a big male to do that and a very quiet night.
I almost never hear any of my Tokay between floors. And I have almost 100. Now I can have several males calling at once and can hear them in the room next door, or down the hall, but not between floors.
As a side note, I do have a Gekko smithi who's bark sounds like a dog from down the street. And he is really loud. Rufff, rufff! Ha!!!
All the best,
Michael

I suppose it depends on the acoustics of the place, i have a friend who can hear hers from the other side of her house through closed doors.

I can hear my males from the other room but not too much further. It's much like a frog croak. I rather enjoy hearing it, crickets to me a much more of a issue. Lol.

Fortunately my wife and I love both the sounds of crickets and the various gecko calls around our house. My wife sits and listens to try to figure out which species and even which male is calling, barking, clucking, clicking or in the case of Leachies sometimes, screaming!

I breed roaches and pick up crickets to keep it to a min. It doesn't drive me crazy just louder than the geckos usually. I have a lilac crown amazon that has mastered the sound to-kay. It's so funny.

I keep trying. She knows the camera and is shy around it. All I get is her sticking her tounge out at me. Lol.

They are not that loud. Their barks are not as loud as a dog or something that would disrupt your neighbours. However, females do bark less, or not even. So perhaps if you are concerned, look into a female.
