Default New here and to Tokay geckos with few questions

How long does the shedding process usually last, do they stop eating because of it, and how does my setup look? Sorry but just got this Tokay for about a week only.

So far I have read through 20 pages on here already. From what I read everyone's Tokays are pretty active, not this guy though, he barely ever moves at all and I find him on the ground a lot. Could be because he's shedding though.

He's been like this for a few days now.

His new enlcosure, old one was a reptarium.

Pretty sure I'll have more questions to come.

First you need to take that light out of the cage. He can climb up on it and get very badly burnt. Try giving more hiding places and spray a few times a day till he sheds.

Welcome to the forums, and as BlakeDeffenbaugh said, you have to take out that light of the cage, or your tokay can get burn , and other thing you have to spray too much your gecko, because he need a lot humidity in the skin-change, in other way it can get hurt himself.

Well good luck and take care of your tokay .

Thanks for responses

I'll find a way to put heatlamp on outside of enclosure instead, anyone know a way of making custom hood/cover? I'm going to try to find him a few females soon, been thinking about locally for long captives but might just order a few from couple of breeders in here.

Just buy some chicken wire or screening. Maybe mesh but mesh might be too thick, i'm not sure on that. Cut the screen to fit, then weld it to some sort of lining. Try to make the lining like mini angle iron coping. I don't know how small they'll sell that coping but I doubt it's small enough for that. If you can't get anything like that just get sheet metal and cut it and bend it to make coping similar to that of the store bought screen covers

I"m not too handy with tools but will head to the local hardware store and see what I can find this weekend. Need to try build a basking area for two turtles as well.

I'm not too handy with tools either but it's never too late to learn. Just be careful and all that lol.
Another way that might be easier is to just get some wood and make a frame then staple gun the screening to the wood (staples on the top side, just in case)

its not a good idea to have lights exposed like that for any climbing geckos so I would get that took out or covered. If you have only had him for a week give him some time to get used to his new surroundings and he will slowly get more active.

So far he still has not completely shed. I have been doing my daily misting but nothing has really improved I hope he completely sheds soon, seems like he's not eating the Dubia roaches and crickets I have in tank.

Any suggestions?

he's new to that enclosure right? so maybe he's not shedding cause he's stressed (i'm not sure about that) but anyway, you're gonna have to handle him if you haven't done that much yet so be prepared for a fight, moisten up some paper towels with hot water. let them cool so they don't burn him but are warm. then wrap him up in them and hold him like that so that it moistens up the shed. do that for about 5 minutes a few times a day, after you moisten it up gently pull the shed to see how much will come right off. if it's not coming up don't force it, it'll hurt him, just keep doing the paper towel thing until it's loose enough.

you said he's not active, does he get real feisty when you try to pick him up though? if he doesn't fight much he's probably sick with parasites or something (which'll require a vet visit) and if you don't know already, don't handle him unless you have to so that he can adjust to the new enclosure
