Question New Leopard Gecko owner and unsure if I have a concern with one of my juveniles.

Hello to anyone out there. I am new to the world of Leopard Geckos. My husband and I purchased two back in August, Max and Bruce, for my children. While I know my children are too young to be responsible for them, this was a step toward a new pet, knowing in time we will lose our dog. Ultimately, my husband and I are caring for them.

Max was first received at a weight of 5 grams, Bruce at 10 grams. We are still unsure of their sexes. The geckos seemed to be doing really well and seemed happy in their habitat. We've got a warm hide, cool hide, reptile "carpet", appropriate food and water dishes, under tank heater on one side, correct bulbs for day and night. I think we're doing okay there.

Recently, I've started to see Max having issues with his/her head. It looks like someone sprinkled calcium on the head. I have also noticed the last shed did not go as well on the head for this gecko. Our other gecko, Bruce, looks fabulous.

I have two books I have read through and looked over again and again, along with searching online for help. Does anyone have any ideas what may be happening?

I am a die hard pet owner and don't like to see any of my pets ill. I want to make sure I'm doing things right.

Welcome to GU! This is a great resource for beginners!
I would add some moss to the warm side hide to bump up humidity. It will help them shed better.
You may also want to help get the current stuck shed off with warm water and a q-tip. Just be very careful and go slowly to ensure that you just get old skin off and not the new skin underneath as well.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Question

Thanks for the welcome! This white appearance is showing up between his sheds. I did assist with his head shedding and things seemed alright for awhile. I am also noticing a bit of this white substance (?) on Max's tail.

I'm wondering if we have a bullying issue, but I'm pretty sure we have one male, one female. When I called our reptile vet, he stated they were too young for him to give us an accurate sex determination.

Any more thoughts? We know if it is ultimately bullying, we will need to separate them.

Yeah, it could be from a scuffle between the two of them. If you have one male and female I would separate them so you don't have any accidental or harmful breeding. A male will try to breed a female even if she's not sexually mature enough. I would go ahead and separate them now just to be sure (at least untill you're certain of the sex of each of them). Do you have a rough estimation on age? You could post a picture of them and we could give you a rough estimate on age too.
