Ari ~
I don't know whether there is a brand of an UTH with a built-in thermostat. Maybe you could Google such? Let me know if you find one
Any chance of posting a picture of his undersides? Perhaps the dark coloration is a sign of the sand? When one of my northern velvet geckos suffered some sand ingestion with a resulting prolapse (which was reinserted successfully) the vet perscribed catlax to the lips once a day,
only feed chicken baby food till the sand had passed (to not compound the impaction---mealworms can make things worse too), and warm soaks for 10-15 minutes twice daily.
Other folks have used some drops of mineral oil.
To keep the crickets in a feeding dish, the back legs can be cut off at the "knees".

Feeding that way (letting Wesley catch the crickets from a dish) probably will be less stressful, unless he is really tame. My leo will sometimes eat from my hand and most the times eat from a feeding dish.
