Default U. Phantasticus -- An Anomaly and some fun!

It's hard to follow some of the recent posts. But, I was cleaning today and figured I'd join in the fun!

A bit of an anomaly! I didn't want to stress her too much, so no head shots today..

A closer shot of her tail

The next few are just for fun!

A little red girl

I'm guessing MonteQ's is refering to the serrations at the base of the geckos tail, which is usualy a characteristic that is more common to males.

ahh i see. I don't really know what I was looking for. That is quite interesting... I always thought that the features thought to be part of sexual dimorphism have never been 100%. Unless its a very "Feminine" looking male...

Thanks Graham! Love the new avatar btw! I wish I could get shots like that! These represent the extent of my macro abilities at the moment...lol

Scott is correct. The barbed tail "tends" to be a male characteristic. Not to say that females don't exist, I have seen a few actually. In my experience, it's not the norm.

Just havin' a bit of fun with another aspect of these guys that keeps me fascinated! They just don't seem to like to be defined in a neat little package ;o)

Thanks

I think i was looking for something drastic, like it had formed gills or wings or something, so overlooked the details!

I know what you mean though - watching my aff.ebenaui growing into adults, I started to notice lots of change in them. to begin I thought I found mites or something on the male, but noticed that he developed a few red spots, and then some green and so on.

That's the great thing about uroplatus, no two specimins are alike

i dont know if i would call it an anomaly for there to be a few notches at the very base of the tail on a female.

at least as far as my caresheet goes, my statement of females rarely having notches in the tail was aimed at the entire length of the tail.

now this was an anomaly: this was just a pic when it was a hatchling, but it turned out to be female. one very unfortunate circumstance was the fact it dropped its tail.

Graham - Lol! Thankfully no gills on this one, though that certainly would be a startling discovery...

Mike - Awesome little girl! Thanks for sharing! She has to be about the most extreme exception to the "rules" I've seen. Shame to hear she lost that gorgeous tail. Reminded me of this old post (the gorgeous gray girl):

Some of our Hatchling and Juvie Phants

Out of curiosity was the tail passed down? Or was it a totaly random occurence?

Anyone else have some to share?

I *think* that my female aff.ebenaui may have a tiny notch or two, but I don't think its that obvious. I'll have a look in a minute when I feed them. I may be making it all up!

I have seen a few females with a barb. The little red girl in the first post has one row. That first girl's is just more pronounced than usual from what I've seen. She still has a pretty female shaped tail over all though.

Here's an example of an un-notched male's tail for comparison. Not the best pic... But, it's not quite as wide or rounded and usually a little longer than on females.

One of the girls was shedding today...kinda liked this pic

(I've been wanting to trim back the birds nest at the top, but they're in it all the time!)
