Default Mossy leaftail gecko Question A.S.A.P

Just picked up a mossy leaf tail gecko its full grown they are guessing 1 year old or so its a male . i plan on getting 2-3-4 more females ,

Im new to the leaf tail as i breed gargoyles but same pretty well ,

i was wondering tank size . I have a planted 50gallon show case with cork tile on all the walls and etc.. would this tank be to big for them i told that its to big do you agree with this ? if so what size tank is good ?

i have a 50gallon i can use or a 18x18x24 exo terra tank i would like to give them a nice planted tank but people are saying its to big please help

also for eggs i was told they dont burrie there eggs so having dirt all over isnt a problem if you're trying to breed them i was told to have leaves in one conor of the tank and they will lay them under the leaves this true or no ?

thanks

Hi Angelina,

I don't have mossy leaftails but they are pretty the same as other Uroplatus. Your 50 gal is certainly not too big. I keep a pair of guentheri's in a natural 70 gal viv and lineatus in a 400gal without any problems. On the ground i put a thick layer of cocopeat covered with leaves. They always put their eggs under the leaves so they are easy to find.
Good luck with them. They are great geckos.

I would not go for the stereotypical gecko breeding set up with "one stud male" and a bunch of females. Male Mossies seem to be more delicate, atleast in my experience. Also, I am not too sure about Mossies breeding, but my lone male did not do anything with my females while they were cycling.

An enclosure can never be too big in my opinion.Give your mossies the biggest cage your budget can afford. The only real drawback in a large, heavily planted vivarium,is the potential of not seeing your pets that often as they will hide, and the potential inconvenience of your pets having to track their prey through such dense foliage.Good luck to you!!!

I just set up a 46 gallon vivarium with a pond for my lone male that is also about a year old....I am planning on getting some females for him too. I moved him from a smaller enclosure and he seems to love it. He made full use of the tank! I would say go for the 50 gallon!

Hello there,

I have kept sikorae sameiti in an exclosure of 50x60x120cm and I had the idea that they really needed the space to get around. Very jumpy hunters I have noticed. Of course the bigger, the better, but to give you at advice on minimum sizes, I would go for at least 40x50x80cm exclosures!

I agree, my enclosure is 45x50x80cm currently for my lone Sikorae male...although he will be getting a playmate soon.
