Default pietschmanni mites...

When I received my cork barks in December, they had a few tiny red mites...so I picked them off with modified forceps. I have picked off one or two since then, but today...I picked off almost 2 dozen between the both of them.

I guess it would be good practice to check over your geckos with bright light and a magnifying glass every couple months.

I've been finding most of the mites on mine around their eye sockets, so tweezers have been a big no no. I've been getting out my big floor sewing lamp to hold them under, and dabbing the mites with a qtip and vegetable oil. So far I haven't seen any come back.

It's not uncommon for the mites to live in the ear canals when tiny and migrate outwards around the bottom as they grow. I've never had any "outbreaks" per se, but have found them on animals that I thought were clean for months! The vegetable oil trick seems to do the job well.

I too have found most of the mites around the eye sockets. I've seen this in mostly my Sikorae. Getting them off was a huge pain, but eventually they all came off with the same method used by BonnieLorraine.

Good luck.

When I purchased a WC male Ptychozoon kuhli, he came with 28 bright reddish orange mites. I used canola oil on a q-tip, and then used a dry q-tip to brush off the suffocated mite. The mites never returned, so I must have found them all.

Yeah, the little red ones that burrow their heads into the skin...

Armen...are the mites around the eyes the little red ones?
