Default Uroplatus questions

I'm interested in getting a leaf-tailed gecko, and I was wondering which species would make an ideal first leaf-tailed gecko? What cage size does it need? Also, where can I get a captive-bred leaf tail?

All I know is that henkeli and guentheri are the best beginners as they are more forgiving of mistakes. I'll let one of the pros chime in for the rest.

I've been told that Henkeli, Lineatus, and Guentheri are all great for beginners, Pietschmanni and perhaps even Fimbriatus work well for others. Most of the larger species are quite hardy and, to repeat what Sporonicle said, are more forgiving of mistakes.

Phantasticus and Ebenaui are more for advanced keepers, but some first timers keep them with little to no issue.

Keep doing your homework, learn as much as you can about this species, you must be prepared before you attempt Uroplatus!!!

Good Luck!

Lineatus are absolutely no beginners leaftails! Neither are fimbriatus, pietschmanni, phantasticus, ebenaui,... . Try to find captive bred henkeli or guentheri.

I would say Henkeli. That's one of the hardiest i've seen so far. I myself started out with phantasticus, but first got al the background info and stuff (bought some books, read them like ten times!). If you inform yourself well, make the setup in advance of buying the leaftails, post on here and ask all questions you need answers to. We are always willing to help.

Henkeli by far are the best beginner species. I know a lot of people seem to have problems with fimbriatus but from my experience they are fairly hardy.

Minimum cage requirements for a single adult henkeli would be 18X18X36in imo.
With Uroplatus the more room the better, they are VERY active geckos.

EDIT: Of course, anyone considering Uroplatus should have several years experience with reptiles and preferebly geckos specifically. These are NOT beginner species.

Sikorae all day. They are extremely hardy especially of temperature spikes. Ive had these guys in the 60s during cooling and up to the mid 80s for brief periods during the summer. I have kept all species of Uroplatus except pietschmanni (WC and CB) and I found that Sikorae and Ebenaui were most hardy. There are quite a few breeders on this site you could buy from. If you have a fair amount of gecko experience you could probably handle a WC sikorae or ebenaui as long is it doesnt come in too rough. If you are just getting into uroplatus take plenty of time to research the species you would like to keep
