Question Need help! swollen eye - U.pietschmanni

Hi everyone,

Three weeks ago, I found my first pietschmanni hatchling, everything was fine!
But now his left eye began to swell more and more and he has a scratch on his nose.
And now, I think, it could be related to each other!

What do you think about it. Or has anyone experienced something like this?

Thank you for watch,
Michael

Hello
I had this problem with my baby U.guentheri. I rubbed eye with Boron water (solutio acidi borici 3%). Swelling is reduced over time, but over time he returned. Baby died after about a month of swelling of the eye. After the death of babies, I pierced the eye, spilled it "clear water".

its an infection. I'd recommend taking it to a vet where it can be drained then treated with antibiotics otherwise you'll lose it within weeks.

had the same issue several times with pietsch and guentheri

it is indeed an infection, of the tear duct usually (it blocks the tears and makes the pre-corneal membrane swollen)

at my place I think it was caused by unsanitary conditions with pietsch (old stagnant water in my misting system); and wrong climatic conditions for the guentheri (too cold and wet)

you indeed need to drain it quick, you can make a small incision (with scalpel) of the membrane, preferably on the top side, then it will be more easy to put eyedrops

I had great results using tevemyxine (ask your vet for posology, cant remember right now) to treat the infection, plus ocrygel to prevent eye drying

of course you need to house the animal in a clean quarantine like enclosure during the treatment

good luck!

also your baby looks skinny, so try to feed them with the tweezers, otherwise you can buy high protein solution for recovering animals and make it licking

Thank you for your report. I will go to my vet to see what he says!

Thank you very much.
I also think that there could be an infection in his eye, and therefore I will visit my vet.

Thank you David, for your detailed reply.

At how many Uros you had this phenomenon? and how many survived.

I feed the little guy for a week from tweezers, and fortunately it works!
Hope my vet has an idea.

My friend had a crested gecko hatchling with the same problem, she had it drained at the vets, and was shown how to do this at home. The eye always swelled up after a while once it was drained, so its an on going problem

like Jonathan pointed out, at my place, only the ones treated with antibiotics survived

it is an on going problem if you only drain the eye without treating the infection

The vet (who is very knowledegable in reptiles) who treated the cresty thought it was more likely to have been from a trauma and not an infection, and because the crested gecko was very small the vet thought an operation was just too risky, and decided instead to use a steroid injection into the eye after first aspirating the eye (where a lot of clear liquid was removed) After this the gecko was fine for about 2 weeks, after which the eye became black and filled up again, another vet visit and injection followed. It seems that the treatment works for about 2-3 weeks before the eye needs draining again.

??? don't really understand what you try to explain, when you said steroid injection it means medicines/antibiotics??

anyway, 2-3 weeks is the time needed for the membrane to recover and then to swell again, because the tear duct remains blocked, then it is indeed, obviously, an on going problem as it is not solved... (?!)

I feel I'm lost in translation right now :-s
