Default At what age you can sex U. phantasticus?

Hi,

I have a question for the specialists: I know that you can see the difference in sex of Uroplatus phantasticus at their tails but at what age is that? Does the form/ edge of the tail change when growing up or can you sex them at birth?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Hello Peter,

you can have a good guess as soon as they are born, the shape of the tail doesn't change that much when growing up.

regards,

Stijn

The shape of the tail is not a reliable indicator of sex, although a notched tail is most likely male (rarely, females will have significant notching on the tail).

As Miguel stated the tail notching is not definative. I've found that the markings just below the eye to be the best indicator with male having a large white tear drop. This can often be seen at hatching. Females tend to either lack markings or have a very linear white line.
The first photo is of a male with the classic white tear drop. The second is a notched tail female. The third photo is that same female. The fourth photo is of a female with the linear white marking.
